Chairman Ken Anderson and a company acting on behalf of late owner Eddie Davies's Trust have separately filed documents to place Bolton into administration.
Anderson said on Wednesday there was 'little or no choice' but for 'one of us' to take action, but a club statement said papers have in fact been filed by both parties.
'Ken Anderson filed the Notice of Intent to appoint an administrator forms with the (Insolvency and Companies Court) yesterday morning (Wednesday) for both Bolton Wanderers Football Club and Bolton Whites Hotel in his position as a qualifying floating charge holder on both companies,' the statement said.
'Later in the day Flidraw Limited, on behalf of the late Eddie Davies's Trust, also filed similar documents for both Burnden Leisure and Bolton Wanderers Football Club having served demand notices on both companies earlier in the day.'
Bolton hope to have an administrator in place by the end of the week, although the process can take up to 10 days.
The club will play in League One next season after they were relegated from the Championship this term.

Sad, I used to go to Bolton town centre every weekend with my parents in the 80's/90's. Now it's a dire place with the highlight being Greggs. Sadly the mighty wanderers have followed the town into a catastrophic slump.
By the way im from bolton aswell been ere all my life. I was in town yesterday. Thank god you left.

Another kick in the teeth. Our club has been a laughing stock since 2012 and it's only going to get worse. If we are not careful over 140 years of history will be all for nothing. Wouldn't wish this shambles on any club.
Administration done it for Portsmouth! Maybe it will put you lot back on the right track! I hope it does I like Bolton.

Surely they should have additional points deducted for not completing their season?

I'm old enough to remember Bolton being a mighty team and Burnden Park a fortress. Bolton v either of the Manchester clubs was a big occasion. I hop they make it back to the big time.

Very sad, a Bolton mate in Heaton... you wouldn't have seen this 10 years ago or even last season, terrible ownership.
