Defender feigned to take a free-kick but then collapsed in a heap in agony while clutching his knee
Adam Smith was stretchered off against Newcastle with what is feared to be a serious knee injury.
The defender feigned to take a free-kick but then collapsed in agony while clutching his knee.
Smith, 27, had nobody near him when he went down and the physio ran onto the pitch to assess his injury.
But it soon became clear that Smith was unable to walk off the field and a stretcher was called onto the pitch.
Play was suspended for eight minutes before Charlie Daniels eventually come on to replace him.
He was clearly in distress and the medical staff were forced to help Smith with oxygen as his team-mates watched on with worried looks on their faces.
The Cherries will be concerned that he has suffered suspected ligament damage which could rule him out for a minimum of six months.
Newcastle tweeted about the incident: "Adam Smith leaves the field on a stretcher and looks to be in some distress.
"There is applause from all corners of the stadium as he is carried off - we wish him well."
Smith has been an important figure for Bournemouth this season having started each and every Premier League match.

you sometimes always choose to write nonsense, if you really watch the game, you should have seen it that a Newcastle player obstructed him from taking the free kick quick by a sudden tackle, it was in this process he got injured, always get your information right before giving out fake news

Somewhere Raheem Sterling is adding that to his little book of ways to dive.

If that had NBA refs they'd send off the Newcastle player for raising his foot, thus delaying the free kick and causing the injury

It doesn't show it on the replay but he lands awkwardly about 2 mins before this situation, I think this just aggravated the damage already done.

The first camera angle looked like Newcastle player hit him when he tried to shoot. Really strange.

maybe he got punched in the knee by the invisible hand

I may be wrong, but if his knee has gone from such a small movement it probably wasn't going to survive until the end of the match either was it?

Might be a dislodged knee cap from retracting his leg movement

Props to the referee for immediately signalling to the medical team to come on. Think I would have just stood there wondering wtf had happened!

Crazy how our joints can deal with forces like 10x our body weight in directions they’re meant to handle, but just a small slip outside of their normal plane of function and you’re done for the season

It's not really the knee itself, moreso loading the patellar tendon and surrounding tendons/ligaments.

It pops back into place very quickly if that was the injury.

He's dislocated his knee. It happened to me a few times after I twisted my knee a few times. I got an ACL a bit later.

I've known people to have their kneecap pop out of place briefly in motions like that, but surprised if this is what happened to Smith.

Yeah I played with a kid from grade school through high school who in 6th grade had this exactly happen to him. Went to kick the ball and stopped, and his knee locked.

He truly has an invisible hand with him then. Looks like something snapped in his knee
