Substitute Jay Rodriguez snatched victory at the death for Burnley with the only shot on target to settle a bad-tempered encounter at a drenched Bournemouth.
It sealed Burnley's second away win of the season after a niggly 90 minutes which frequently threatened to boil over. In one of few moments of quality, substitute Aaron Lennon passed inside to Ashley Westwood and his cross was caressed home by the head of Rodriguez, his fourth goal of the season.
A niggly first-half low on quality was notable only for high balls too numerous to count and for ten fouls from the away side. The first, a reckless high boot from Ashley Barnes on Simon Francis, was not deemed serious enough to earn even a booking by referee Martin Atkinson.
While lacking intent, it was nevertheless reckless and the Burnley striker was fortunate to avoid punishment. After a lengthy delay, the Bournemouth stalwart emerged from the damp turf with a bandage around his head. It would come in handy, such was the aerial bombardment coming his way.
With Sean Dyche living every moment, Burnley peppered Francis and Ramsdale with high balls - the latter dealt well with everything thrown his way until the winner - while frustrating any Bournemouth attempt to break at speed. The home side thought they had pierced Burnley's ever-present banks of four with Jefferson Lerma, Ryan Fraser combining to great effect.
But the attack stalled at the edge of the area and the hostilities resumed. This time James Tarkowski clobbered Fraser. Again, it was lacking intent and had the look of a fly half colliding with an oversized No 8. Without a single shot on target in the first half, the only question was whether Atkinson would let the game flow.
Presumably aware that, like a dam, the first booking would lead to a deluge, the official kept his cards in his pocket until Westwood's petulant shove on Diego Rico.
After the break Callum Wilson replaced Lewis Cook. While Bournemouth looked to up the ante, both sides upped the bookings.
First, Rico saw yellow for petulantly holding onto the ball at a throw in. Not to be outdone, Barnes shoved the Spaniard in the back. Next, Dwight McNeil clipped Jack Stacey's heel at the half-way line as the full back was bursting through. The spite continued.
Francis shoved Taylor to earn himself a card and then Hendrick was booked for a late tackle on Fraser.
After Bournemouth won a corner, Billing grappled with Barnes, the Dane swinging his arm and seemingly catching the combative striker's head. Barnes went down like he had been struck by Mike Tyson, but after a VAR review, there was no punishment.
Bournemouth continued to press for the elusive goal, but were outdone at the death by Burnley's snatch and grab, Rodriguez's goal given after a VAR review. with suspected handball ruled out.
