Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

He suffered the knee injury during Bournemouth's win against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night and went through a scan on Wednesday that revealed the degree of the damage.

And Bournemouth have now confirmed that the 21-year-old will be out for the next six to nine months.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe commented: 'We are all devastated for Lewis.

'It is a huge blow to a very talented player who has been a very important part of our side over the last 18 months.

'But Lewis is a strong character who only has to look around our dressing room for inspiration of how an injury like this is merely a setback and to know that he can come back better than ever.

'He will have the full support and love of everyone at the club throughout the next few months as he receives the very best treatment and rehabilitation possible.'

Cook had had an impressive season until the injury, playing in 13 of 15 of Bournemouth's Premier League games.

It will also come as a disappointment to Gareth Southgate, who handed Cook a senior cap prior to the last World Cup and earmarked him as a future member of his side. He was named on England’s standby list for the World Cup last summer

Cook captained England to victory in the Under-20 World Cup last summer.

Bournemouth will now be without Cook when they face Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.
