Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
He suffered the knee injury during Bournemouth's win against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night and went through a scan on Wednesday that revealed the degree of the damage.
And Bournemouth have now confirmed that the 21-year-old will be out for the next six to nine months.
Cherries boss Eddie Howe commented: 'We are all devastated for Lewis.
'It is a huge blow to a very talented player who has been a very important part of our side over the last 18 months.
'But Lewis is a strong character who only has to look around our dressing room for inspiration of how an injury like this is merely a setback and to know that he can come back better than ever.
'He will have the full support and love of everyone at the club throughout the next few months as he receives the very best treatment and rehabilitation possible.'
Cook had had an impressive season until the injury, playing in 13 of 15 of Bournemouth's Premier League games.
It will also come as a disappointment to Gareth Southgate, who handed Cook a senior cap prior to the last World Cup and earmarked him as a future member of his side. He was named on England’s standby list for the World Cup last summer
Cook captained England to victory in the Under-20 World Cup last summer.
Bournemouth will now be without Cook when they face Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Done this when I was 16 ruptured the ACL and MCL from one bad tackle, still recovering from it 10 years later every time I get a twinge in my knee my heart sinks remembering the 14 months I spent trying to get back fit(Sunday league fit!!) luckily haven't gotten a bad injury since touch wood! Best of luck Lewis I hate to see anyone get this type of injury.
I got the grafts from my hamstring and my knees been brand new since thankfully! Went back playing when I was 18 and been playing Sunday league since! Have strained the ligaments in my other knee since then but was only out four weeks! Genuinely wouldn't wish a ruptured knee ligament on my worst enemy it's a horrible injury and nobody knows how well you'll recover, I think I was very lucky I was so young when it happened as strange as that sounds.

Big loss for us with Gosling injured also. We always seem to be struck by serious knee injuries. This is our 5th in 3 years, Wilson x2, Gradel, Mings, now Cook. Gutted for the lad.

What a miserable week for English football. Cook, Holding and Gomez all out for ages. Why can't these f o r e i g n players get injured instead?

Snapped my ACL along with the MCL and PCL plus a smashed knee cap when I was 15. Unfortunately due to the length of time between it happening and the operation taking place, nearly 4 years, there was not much the Surgery could correct. These footballers get a hell of a lot better for the body and recovery Advanced Surgery Techniques and Post Operative Care than we do BUT it will not be a given that he will be back to how he was. Hard Work Starts the Day After The Operation

At this time of the year when the games come fast and furious you have to rotate players and it helps when you have depth in quality because the chances of injury usually increase.
