Glen Johnson has revealed Liverpool's squad never saw Brendan Rodgers' infamous envelopes again after they hit the limelight in a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Rodgers' early days in charge of the Premier League outfit were aired to the public in 2012 in the fly-on-the-wall documentary 'Being Liverpool'.

The documentary left many feeling it portrayed the now Leicester manager in a negative light during his first few weeks at Liverpool.

One scene in particular - where Rodgers presented his squad with three envelopes that were said to contain the names of players he knew would let his side down that season - came in for ridicule.

However, former right-back Johnson has defended his former manager, claiming Rodgers' 'psychology games' in fact gave everyone an extra push.

'It's just one of them psychology games,' Johnson, who played for Liverpool between the years of 2009-2015, winning won one League Cup, told the Anfield Wrap.

'Brendan said there's three envelopes here with three names in, one of these guys in these envelopes is going to let us down this season, just make sure it's not you.

'Of course we never saw the envelopes again and it was never mentioned again, so I think it was just to give everyone that extra edge as no one wanted to be the name in the envelope.

'There was probably never any names in there anyway, but it seemed to work alright.'

The Reds placed seventh in Rodgers' first season in charge before agonisingly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City the campaign after.
