Bruno Fernandes plays down row with Lindelof after Man Utd's 2-1 defeat

Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof came close to blows after Luuk de Jong scored for Sevilla on Sunday, dumping Manchester United out of the Europa League.

United's 2019-20 season came to a painful close in Cologne as they squandered a 1-0 lead to end a long Europa League campaign at the semi-finals.

De Jong's 78th minute winner saw the Dutchman tap in unmarked from Jesus Navas' cross, with neither Harry Maguire nor Aaron Wan-Bissaka tight enough to the striker.

Fernandes confronted the centre-back over the defensive lapse, infuriating Lindelof as the Swede fronted-up to his team-mate and barked an insult back at him.

'It is normal when you concede a goal, everyone was mad,' the Portuguese talent said on the incident.

'It was not about me or Victor, what happened is nothing. It was normal, it is about looking out for each other. It will happen in a lot more teams too.'

Fernandes and United's forward-line will shoulder plenty of blame themselves for the defeat, failing to bag a second goal despite creating more than enough scoring chances.

Ole Gunnar Solkjaer's side had already taken some of the pressure off success by qualifying for the Champions League with third-place in the Premiership, but were devastated that their gruelling run in the competition ended in failure.

Pundits such as Paul Scholes were quick to call for summer signings following the defeat, which highlighted that Solskjaer still has work to do in United's revival.
