Bruno: We should have been braver in pressing; Coaching staff need to review tactics

In the third round of the Champions League group stage, Manchester United suffered a 1-4 away defeat to Como. After the match, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was interviewed by TNT Sports, where he discussed the team's poor start, insufficient pressing, and tactical decisions.

Reporter: Bruno, as captain, I'm sure you have strong feelings about the team's performance tonight. What exactly went wrong?

Obviously, this isn't the first time we've started poorly. I felt we didn't press enough, and our off-ball movement wasn't sharp enough. Many things didn't go our way.

Conceding an early goal put us on the back foot from the start. In the current situation, if we can't play our own style, if we're not brave enough to push forward, take risks, control possession actively, and create chances, it will be very difficult to turn this around.

Reporter: There were periods in the first half where you seemed to be attempting a high press, but there appeared to be a lack of coordination across the team. Do you have confidence that you can work together to solve these on-pitch problems?

Of course, we can. But the coaching staff's tactical plan was to avoid man-to-man pressing, drop deeper to win the ball back, and let the opponent advance while ceding possession.

However, when you give teams of this quality too much possession, they gain confidence. Many of their players operate deep, which is exhausting and frustrating. When you finally win the ball back, it's hard for your legs and mind to reset.

Reporter: Do you think there was a tactical error tonight? The coaching staff chose not to press, and that ultimately cost you?

That's something for the manager and coaching staff to examine, not for me to judge. I simply believe we needed to be braver with our pressing, to take the risk of a high press and make it difficult for the opponent, just as they did to us.

As you saw, they pressed very aggressively—their center-backs even followed me deep into our half. I think we need to do that too sometimes, but we didn't manage it tonight.

Against a team that's good at penetrating through the middle and likes short passing combinations in tight spaces, if you give them too much time on the ball and space to circulate it in midfield, they'll exploit the wings and create huge gaps. That's exactly what happened tonight, especially with their first goal.
