Premier League star Ashley Barnes was reportedly arrested for drink-driving after his Burnley side secured their Premier League status last week.

Barnes, 31, is said to have had a four-hour drinking session with his Burnley team-mates on the coach journey back following their victory over Fulham last Monday.

The Sun claim Barnes was later pulled over by police after getting behind the wheel of his £55,000 Mercedes V-Class people carrier near his home and was arrested after failing a breathalyzer test.

The same publication claim that Burnley manager Sean Dyche has been left 'furious' over the incident.

Barnes played no part in Burnley's 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Wednesday night after being left on the substitutes' bench for the majority of the match.

The same report quoted a source claiming that he is 'mortified' by what he's done.

The striker was an 86th-minute substitute in the 2-0 win over Fulham last week, which guaranteed Burnley another season of top-flight football.

Barnes, married to Suzanne, 33, was released on police bail after being arrested close to his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 3am on Tuesday and is set to appear in court on June 14.

He will also face a club disciplinary hearing.

A club spokesman told The Sun: 'Burnley FC upholds and expects the highest standards of responsible behaviour from all its players and staff.

'Therefore, while observing the conclusion of legal proceedings, the club will be treating this matter with the utmost seriousness.

'The player will be subject to internal disciplinary procedures.'

Cheshire Police also made a statement, which read: 'At around 3am on Tuesday, May 11, officers stopped a black Mercedes V220.

'The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving.

'Ashley Luke Barnes, of Wilmslow, was subsequently charged.'

Burnley travel to already-relegated Sheffield United on Sunday for their final game of the season.
