CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES 2024-25: Luton and Burnley clash in opening round

The fixtures for the upcoming Championship season have been officially released ahead of what is expected to be a hugely competitive campaign.

Luton and Burnley, both relegated from the Premier League last term, play in the opening round on Monday, August 12.

And the season begins with two matches on Friday, August 9 when Blackburn host Derby and Sheffield United travel to Preston for 8:00pm kick-offs.

It looks a tough ask on paper for newly-promoted Portsmouth, with John Mousinho's men visiting Elland Road to face Leeds, who missed out on promotion via the playoffs last term.

One date that will be circled in the calendars of all fans in Sheffield will be the first derby day.

That takes place on September 11 at Brammall Lane with bragging rights on the line and the return fixture is on March 15.

Oxford United, who were promoted from League One last season, host Norwich in their first game back in the second tier.

Naturally, most fans will eye the final round of fixtures, with promotion or relegation often going down to the wire.

Burnley and Sheffield United are at home against Millwall and Blackburn respectively.

Luton travel to the midlands to play West Brom and Leeds have to make the long journey south for their game against Plymouth Argyle.

With two traditional heavy-hitters in Leicester and Southampton now back in the Premier League, along with Ipswich Town, it could be one of the most open Championship seasons in recent memory.

The bookmakers have Leeds as favourites to go up, followed by Burnley and Luton but as ever, the second tier is one of the most unpredictable leagues in the world and looks set for a year full of twists and turns.
