Caicedo highlights £7.5m Chelsea transfer mistake amid 'perfect club' remark

Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo this summer from Brighton with two displays this past weekend highlighting a transfer mistake they may have made 12 months ago

Chelsea endured an extremely busy summer transfer window with their determination to sign Moises Caicedo taking the focus. Despite seeing a number of bids rejected and thinking Liverpool had completed an unthinkable transfer hijack, the Blues reached a record-breaking £115million agreement with Brighton to sign the midfielder in early August.

Nonetheless, it is still expected that Caicedo will prove to be an excellent, albeit expensive, purchase by Chelsea, however his record-breaking move and a former Blues star's performance has seemingly highlighted a major transfer mistake. Just hours after the Blues were beaten by Anthony Elanga's strike, Billy Gilmour delivered a dominating midfield display in Brighton's 3-1 win over Newcastle.

12 months ago Gilmour signed for the Seagulls for just £7.5million in a separate deal to Levi Colwill's loan move and Marc Cucurella's permanent switch to the Blues. With Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Pascal Gross ahead of him in the pecking order, Gilmour played just 505 Premier League minutes across 14 games last season.

Ferguson may have stole the headlines with his hat-trick but Harry Redknapp specifically picked out the display of Gilmour for praise in his BetVictor team of the week.

"Billy Gilmour ran the show against Newcastle," Redknapp wrote via Premier League Odds. "I was surprised Chelsea let this lad go, what a lovely footballer he is. He’s at the perfect club now though and is making the most of his opportunities this season. He’s so composed and never gives the ball away."

Based on the recent business between Chelsea and Brighton, it seems quite apt that Gilmour, formerly of Chelsea, has essentially replaced Caicedo in the Seagulls midfield following his move to Stamford Bridge. £107.5million is the difference between the duo's respective fees, which quite clearly showcases the mistake Chelsea may have made involving Caicedo, through no fault of his own, and Gilmour.
