Callum Wilson makes his mark for Bournemouth again

Perhaps the biggest surprise wasn't that Callum Wilson headed Bournemouth level at Manchester City, it was the fact he could have had a hat-trick.

It's been quite a month for Wilson. A goal against Manchester United, a goal on his England debut against the USA, and now a goal against the reigning champions and Premier League leaders at the Etihad.

It couldn't save Eddie Howe's side from a fourth straight defeat in what has been a daunting run of fixtures, but there is little doubt that Wilson's stock continues to rise.

The 26-year-old's latest goal in the 3-1 defeat to City was his ninth of the season, seven of which have come in the Premier League. That puts Wilson level with Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and Mo Salah, all of whom play for teams enjoying more possession and creating more chances on average than Bournemouth.

Only Sergio Aguero, Patrick Aubameyang and, now, Raheem Sterling have more in the league this season with eight goals each.

This looked like being a typical afternoon for an opposition striker at the Etihad. Many have come here hoping to unsettle City and ended up as mere spectators as Guardiola's side have steamrollered their way to another win.

City started that way again and when Bernardo Silva fired them ahead in the 16th minute, it felt as though we were looking at another thumping victory for the home team. City had, after all, won all six of the previous six league games between the two clubs by an aggregate score of 21-2.

But Wilson had already been given an early chance from Ryan Fraser's cross to the near post when an even better opportunity presented itself in the 39th minute.

It came down the other flank as Joshua King teased a pass towards the penalty spot. Wilson had once again shown the awareness needed to drift free of two defenders and create enough space for himself.

If King's cross had been an inswinger, he would probably have scored. Instead the ball curled agonisingly away from Wilson as he stretched to make contact.

Bournemouth were growing in confidence, though, as we were treated to the rare sight of City in retreat on home soil and the equaliser came just four minutes later.

King played the ball to Lewis Cook and he slipped it out to Simon Francis on the right. The cross from Bournemouth's No 2 picked out Wilson rising between Danilo and Nicolas Otamendi inside the box.

The outcome was never in doubt from the moment he met it as Wilson guided an emphatic header into the top corner. Even a keeper as good as Ederson never stood a chance. Amazingly, it was only the second goal that City have conceded from open play in the Premier League this season.

Had Bournemouth been a little more decisive, they could even have taken the lead early in the second half. Wilson broke forward and fed the ball into King, but he opted not to shoot and then dithered before dinking a cross to no-one in particular at the back post.

It wasn't the only way Wilson was able to unsettle the City defence. He was also involved in a shoving match with Ederson and Fernandinho after stopping the City keeper from releasing the ball as he looked to make a quick throw.

Further goals from Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan gave City victory, but they were pushed closer by Bournemouth than many expected.

After leading the line for 85 minutes, Wilson got a deserved rest when he was replaced by Lys Mousset towards the end.

By then the game was lost, but he had made his mark again.
