Tottenham Hotspur's 13-year wait for a trophy was prolonged on Sunday afternoon as Pep Guardiola's Manchester City beat them to the Carabao Cup, much to the frustration of Spurs' star players.
Ryan Mason led the team from the dugout in the same week that he took over from Jose Mourinho, but Aymeric Laporte's header sealed the victory for the Citizens. It also highlighted the need for captain Harry Kane to leave the club.
This was Kane's third final with Tottenham, following the 2014/15 Carabao Cup final defeat to Chelsea and the 2018/19 Champions League final against Liverpool. Despite his loyalty to his boyhood club, they have not been able to repay him with silverware.
The club's instability, highlighted by the decision to fire Mauricio Pochettino and failure to improve under Jose Mourinho, shows that Kane does not have time to waste, with him now at the peak of his career.
The England captain is under contract until 2024 and chairman Daniel Levy will not be keen to negotiate with anyone, while it also seems a mystery to think who could afford his demands in terms of a transfer fee.
Kane is in a difficult situation, but he risks seeing his talents go to waste if he sees out his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with it not expiring until he is 30 years of age.
The likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United all need a new No.9, but they are unlikely to be able to afford him in the current financial situation.
If he does stay, Kane will instead set his sights on Jimmy Greaves' record as the club's highest goalscorer, which is only 47 goals away at 266.
Despite all the frustration, the centre-forward is not blameless, though. Against both Liverpool in 2019 and City in 2021, Kane rushed back from injuries to be fit for the final and has looked a shadow of his usual self in these matches.
Without their leader at his best, it is no surprise to see that Spurs have failed to score in a cup final since 2008, when Jonathan Woodgate sent Juande Ramos' team to League Cup victory against Chelsea.
Set to miss out on the Champions League and possibly even the Europa League, Kane knows that this summer, with the European Championship included, will be decisive for his future and his legacy.
