Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher admitted he once had a trial at Manchester United – much to the amazement of Sky Sports peer Gary Neville.

A boyhood fan of another Reds rival, Everton, Carragher first entered the top-flight limelight in 1997, and made his Liverpool debut in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough - never looking back.

Fast-forward 16 years, and the defender retired as one of the club’s most decorated servants, having played 737 times for them and won two FA Cups, three League Cups and a Champions League title.

However, just as things would have played out differently had he perhaps pursued his childhood affinity for the Toffees, Carragher has now come clean about a short stint he had with the Red Devils, shocking punditry colleague Neville.

“I had like a trial… I went to Man Utd for a little bit - I never told you that,” Carragher exclaimed to Neville, speaking on The Overlap On Tour: Unseen Bits, brought to you by Sky Mobile.

“There was a Sunday team who were playing a Man United select, but they weren't like Manchester lads; it was like lads from all around the country who got put together.

“And I played for a Sunday team, so they asked me to play because they were playing Man United, there wasn’t no one in my team so it was to make them a bit stronger.

“So, I played in this game and did quite well. Nobby Stiles was running this team and pulled my dad after it. It was just before I was signing the schoolboy forms for Liverpool.

“My dad wants to make Liverpool think that it wasn’t easy just to sign me. So, I ended up going to a Man United thing; we stayed Friday and Saturday night and played on Sunday.

“But, what was – and again, I say about Man United being ahead of the game – all the lads who were on this weekend, when we went for the trials, it was all the same lads.“

Asked if he got in by Neville, who played out his entire career with United, Carragher replied: “No, I was never going. I just went there, and my dad just used it. It wasn’t even my decision; I was just told I was going to play a game. I remember Ferguson being there.”

“You kept that quiet, you were willing to play for Man Utd,” Neville retorted. “You treacherous traitor. You should be on that programme Traitors, you." Carragher then jokingly admitted: “I go from Everton to Liverpool to Man Utd - I'll do anything for a few quid!”
