Carragher hits back at Neville after US TV clash over Arsenal ‘let-down’ comment

Jamie Carragher has taken aim at Gary Neville after he was 'embarrassed' on American TV by a fellow pundit earlier this month.

The incident occurred while the former Manchester United star was appearing as a pundit on NBC Sports for Arsenal's game against Brentford, which finished 1-1.

That result saw Arteta's side slip 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool following the Reds' victory over West Ham.

Afterwards, Neville claimed that the Gunners had 'gone backwards' throughout the campaign, however he was challenged by fellow pundit Robbie Mustoe.

Mustoe said: 'I wouldn't agree that they have regressed. (Arteta) is getting closer, it was just a difficult season with injuries.'

Neville was on the receiving end of an online bashing by fans as they reacted to Mustoe's brutal putdown on the former United full-back.

Now, Carragher has got himself involved and poked fun at his Sky Sports co-pundit as he claimed Neville got 'absolutely battered' by Mustoe.

Speaking on 'It's Called Soccer' - which is hosted by Carragher and Neville, though the latter wasn't present - he said: 'Has Gary recovered?

'I mean, he got absolutely battered by Robbie Mustoe. He absolutely destroyed him on air! I didn't know if we'd even want him back on Sky.

'He's gone over there and absolutely embarrassed us. He got schooled! I was loving it. He's gone over there to crack America and he can't even crack Robbie Mustoe'.

Carragher, along with co-host Rebecca Lowe, was left in stitches as he chuckled away at Neville's expense.

During his appearance on the show, Neville argued: 'What's happened this season is I think they've gone backwards from the start of the season in terms of their recruitment.

'They never covered themselves for their likely injury to (Kai) Havertz who was their only centre-forward.'

After Mustoe shut down his claims, Neville responded in kind by saying that he thought Arsenal were 'always trying to be let off the hook'.

He also singled out the performances of skipper Martin Odegaard, who he says had a 'big drop-off' throughout the 2024-25 campaign.

Neville also expressed his belief that the Gunners have 'the worst attacking squad out of the top six'.

Arsenal have been without key players in attack for large parts of the season with Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all facing extended periods on the sidelines at various points.

While Liverpool's fate as Premier League champions is all but confirmed, Arteta knows all hope is not lost for his players.

The Gunners recently qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League after a stunning 4-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Despite not holding back when it came to Arsenal's league performances, Neville noted that there was another competition in which Arsenal are serious contenders.

He added: 'If they win the Champions League all will be forgiven but otherwise their league performances have been a big let-down.'
