Carragher questions Man United's handling of the Greenwood situation

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United have 'come to the right decision' over Mason Greenwood - but questioned whether they would've got there without extreme backlash from the public.

After a six-month internal investigation into Greenwood's dropped attempted rape, assault and coercive control charges, Manchester United announced that the forward would not play for the club again in a statement on Monday.

However, it was reported last week that Red Devils CEO Richard Arnold had initially  planned to announce Greenwood's reintegration to his staff and the general public in the first week of August.

Following these leaked reports, United fans heavily criticised the club for proposing to welcome Greenwood back into the fold.

Ahead of Arsenal's clash with Crystal Palace on Monday, Carragher said: 'I think however Manchester United have got to the decision that they’ve got to, you have to say that this is right.

'I think we’d all agree with that across the board – that you know the right decision has been made, that he doesn’t play for Manchester United again.

'But I do feel, what you’ve just mentioned there, public opinion, a story being leaked in the last couple of weeks came out and caused a big stir as well, I think that has almost forced Manchester United’s hand and you’re almost thinking what decision Manchester United may have come to if these stories hadn’t been leaked.

'And then obviously you get the force of public opinion, and that would be a worry and you have to reiterate what Gary (Neville)’s just mentioned about the leadership at the top of the club but ultimately right now they’ve got to the right decision.'

Following news of his potential reintegration, Countdown co-host and longstanding Manchester United fan Rachel Riley urged she would no longer support the club if they welcomed him back into the fray.
