Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to ditch their transfer policy adopted last summer and revert to the methods used beforehand which made them successful.
Liverpool were tipped by many to retain their Premier League crown this season after spending a staggering £446million to supplement their already title-winning squad.
That outlay was the most ever spent by a Premier League club in a single window, eclipsing the £434.5m spent by Chelsea in the summer of 2023.
Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Florian Wirtz (£116.5m) and Alexander Isak (£125m) were the Premier League's three most expensive signings last summer - with the latter two British record-breaking transfers.
Despite all that optimism, the Reds will end the season trophyless - with their title defence in tatters many months ago. Sunday's 3-2 defeat at bitter rivals Manchester United, leaves them in fourth on 58 points after 35 games - 18 points behind current table-toppers Arsenal.
Liverpool have lost 11 games so far this season and will need some reinvestment with the likes of stalwarts Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson leaving Anfield as free agents at the end of the season.
And reflecting on what needs to be done for the Reds to return to the top, club legend Carragher has called on them to go for value-for-money signings, over lavish ones - citing the need to address right wing, right back and central midfield especially.
'Liverpool fans have been desperate for Liverpool to spend real big money, maybe like we've seen Man City or Chelsea in the past in one summer,' he told Sky Sports in the post-match analysis of their defeat at Old Trafford.
'Everyone was excited in the summer, but it didn't feel Liverpool-like to me, or certainly over the last ten years and how they got to the top under Jurgen Klopp.
'It felt almost Real Madrid - go and buy the best players for loads of money.
'I want Liverpool to go back to buying the right players for the right money and what they need right now.
'They won't be able to do what they did last summer, they don't have that type of revenue.
'They don't need to bring six or seven players in, because it's more change, but there's three players that need to go right into the team for me.
'Replace Mo Salah with a right winger, a right-back and a central midfielder then the players you bought last summer like Ekitike, Isak, Wirtz, become better players.'

Cara you are very right. I know Liverpool isn't a sacking team. But when you buy 6 six players and they all flopped, you must think about the coach. None of the signins that performs half of his standards at his former club... Slot is the problem, and if Liverpool continue with him next season, then call them fools!!!

These same players still have the spirit and confidence to compete at a higher level. An experience manager will not need any signing just to replace players whose contracts end at this season. Experience Manager will observe his players playing positions and knows exactly were they can perform better. Again make some new tactical formation. Not just buying players without any internal changes.
exactly thank you. when klop started at Liverpool... he didn't have players but he still trusted his squad.... who would've thought the players he signed for the attacking positions would become legend of the club(bobby, salah, mane). Liverpool is lacking that manager experience or a guy who put his faith in all of his squad not just the one he signed. Only leverage that slot has is that he won the league last season and i surely don't know how... i didn't watch Liverpool last season but I've followed every match this season and boy do i hate slot
