The row with Cristiano Ronaldo and subsequent fall-out has proved to be the defining saga of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United reign so far.
The Red Devils boss, in his debut season at the helm, took on the biggest star in the squad and came out triumphant, proving he was not one to be taken for a fool. With that in mind, some old comments from Edinson Cavani have resurfaced that could offer an explanation as to why Ten Hag was so keen to part ways with Ronaldo.
Speaking in May of last year, Cavani admitted he thought his own days at Old Trafford were numbered following Ronaldo's arrival. He seems to suggest that whenever the five-time Ballon d'Or winner joins a club, a manager feels forced into playing him.
The Uruguayan explained: "Knowing a bit about the world of football these days, the first thing I did was call my brother [Walter Fernando Guglielmone, who also acts as his agent] and said: "Fernando, if this had happened a week ago, I would ask you to find me another club."
"But not because I didn't want to play with Cristiano Ronaldo. No. Because I had the opportunity to know him, and he is a great professional, with his targets, and that is perfect for a sportsman. But as I know, after years in football, how things work these days. That's why I spoke to my brother.
"It was more about understanding the situation. Not because I couldn't play in my role at Manchester, but because there are many things in football nowadays that are different from how they were with other people, how it was before, years ago. And since it happened suddenly, I felt nothing. I thought: We'll play, do the best we can."
Cavani was one of the first to feel the impact of Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford, as the Uruguay international was kind enough to give up the number seven shirt for the former Real Madrid man.

HAVE YOUR SAY!Is Cavani's assessment of Ronaldo's return fair? Comment below
He left in the same summer that Ten Hag arrived, but Cavani may regret not sticking around given the Dutchman did not subscribe to the theory that Ronaldo has to start every game and play every minute.
On the contrary, under Ten Hag's watch, Ronaldo featured just 10 times in the Premier League and completed 90 minutes on no more than three occasions.
Perhaps what is most striking is how well United are faring in Ronaldo's absence. The Red Devils have gone from strength to strength since terminating his contract and now find themselves third in the table just five points off of the top spot.
Marcus Rashford has stepped up in place of the Portugal skipper and at long last United look like they are heading in the right direction as Ten Hag tries to restore them to their former glories.

I honestly don't get why people blame Ronaldo for a teams downfall, I mean can't we just ask ourselves what was sir Alex, carlo and zidane doing right to have such success with him that the other managers aren't doing, what I think is those managers falling off with Ronaldo just don't know how to control a dressing room with someone like him in it, I mean look at psg too, since messi joined that team is still losing in big competitions...

First thing he did at United was to take Cavani's jersey number. And they thought he was coming to play for the team. No sweetheart, he's coming to play for himself and himself alone. The stats last season was telling.

Bringing Ronaldo back to Man U is Man U's biggest error of all time. Getting rid of him was their biggest achievement of all time.

In the last 4 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored a combined 30 free kicks. Messi scored 29 of them.

Only wise will understand Cavani. Most of our good players failed because of Ronaldo.

English media, instead of analyzing your clubs poor performance in UCL, decide instead to speak about Ronaldo. Teams outside England( especially Madrid) are making EPL look like a farmer league and that should be your concern, leave Ronaldo alone. No English player had a career close to his and none will ever had

My question is, is Ronaldo holding your leg against scoring goals bcoz you missed so many open chances and your is just awful nevertheless I’m really thankful that none of you is still at United especially that pogba his lifestyle is something else and I’m really glad that Rashford isn’t his friend like lingard that accompanied him to party and burna boy shows

and non of them won ballon dor in Manchester united only ronaldo who did it
Lol Ballon d’or is a season round award not all time award. A player can go to a new team and win the ballon dor on their first year and leave the next, doesn’t mean he is the greatest player of all time for that team

Cavani’s time in Manchester was more impactful than Ronaldo’s second spell there. He said the truth. Considering his age, any player will want to play constantly. Ronaldo ruined the team not directly but his presence generally take it or leave it

Rooney, Bob, Best...say hi. You want him to be but he isn't. Not even at RM. He has won more trophies and broken and set new records but RM say no one greater than Alfredo Stefano.
