Celtic chasing loan for PSG striker Weah as Rodgers seeks attackers

Celtic are pursuing a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Timothy Weah on loan for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old son of 1995 Ballon d'Or winner George has struggled to make an impact under PSG boss Thomas Tuchel this season, managing just two Ligue 1 appearances and none since mid-August.

Parkhead boss Brendan Rodgers has been in the market for one, possibly two, strikers since Leigh Griffiths was granted indefinite leave for off-field issues and Moussa Dembele joined Lyon in the closing hours of the August transfer window.

New York-born Weah, who has eight caps for the USA, has confirmed plans on his Instagram page to leave the French giants on loan in January, and Amiens, Strasbourg, Rennes, Cannes, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart have all been linked with the teenager.

However, French website RMC Sport claims Rodgers has won the race to sign him, with Celtic coach Kolo Toure credited with playing a prominent role in convincing him to move to Glasgow to join former team-mate Odsonne Edouard, a £9million signing from PSG.

Meanwhile, Rodgers has backed his players to again prove they are Scottish football's big-game hunters in their crunch visits to Pittodrie and Ibrox.

The champions head to Aberdeen  for the first of a high-profile double-header as they seek to cement their place at the top of the Premiership ahead of the winter break.

Celtic have been unconvincing on the road for much of this season, losing to Hearts, Kilmarnock and Hibs and drawing with Livingston and St Mirren.

Rodgers, however, is confident a squad who have amassed seven successive trophies can rise to the occasion against their closest rivals.

'One hundred and fifty per cent - no reason to doubt it again,' he said. 'We dropped points at Livingston, St Mirren was difficult and Hearts was early on. These were around European qualification games and were difficult.

'However one of the things I've never done with this group is doubt them. To sustain our success we've had to retain hunger. We're not a timid team. We look to be as honest as we can to play good football and win. These players will relish the opportunity playing against our biggest rivals.'

Celtic sit one point clear of Rangers and three ahead of Aberdeen, holding a game in hand on both. The chance to lay down a marker is clear, but Rodgers rejects any notion this is a season-defining week.

'They will be good and tough games but they won't define the season. We've had a great 2018. We started slowly in the league but we've been finding our feet and the win over Dundee on Saturday was one of the most enjoyable since I've been here.

'We pressed well, had good energy and were creative and that gives me confidence going into the next two games.

'Win, lose or draw we still have a second half of the season to come and we have a game in hand and we'll get better. They are important games but we've always played well there in different types of games.

'When we've had to battle we've battled and we've gone there and played incredible football to win. They are games to relish.'

Rodgers played down any lingering ill-feeling with Aberdeen after the Betfred Cup final. Dons skipper Graeme Shinnie accused Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig of showing a lack of class in their celebrations at Hampden.

'It's the emotion of the game,' said Rodgers. 'They are a good side and have been our nearest challengers and second throughout my time here.

'After you lose finals - and that was the third to us - there is so much emotion attached. I'll just let it go.'
