Celtic's hiring of Ange Postecoglou 'in jeopardy as he doesn't hold the right UEFA qualifications'

Celtic's hunt for a new manager could take a further blow with reports that top target Ange Postecoglou may not hold the right UEFA qualifications for the job.

The Greek-born Australian has been looking set to replace Neil Lennon - who resigned in February - as the Scottish giants' new boss.

However, according to the Times that pending appointment could now be halted on the account that he does not hold a UEFA A, B and Pro licence.

To manager in the top flight of a European league, UEFA stipulates that a manager must hold A and B licences and - most importantly - at least has embarked upon the most advanced course, the UEFA Pro licence.

The Times claim that the 55-year-old doesn't hold the correct qualification on the account of his lack of managerial experience within Europe.

Despite a 25-year career, he has only spent 10 months of that working in Europe - and that while in charge of Greek third division outfit Panachaiki in 2008.

His only other coaching spell outside of Australia has been his current spell at Japanese outfit Yokohama F Marinos - where he has been in the hotseat for the past three years.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard didn't have a UEFA Pro licence when he took charge of the Ibrox club but he had begun it before his appointment in 2017 and completed it a year later.

Speaking about his future at the weekend, Postecoglou said: “I’ve understood there’s some speculation around the future, but I’ve stopped thinking about the what-ifs in the world a long time ago.

'My focus the last couple of days has been on making sure we [Marinos] play well.'

If Postecoglou is denied the opportunity to take over at Parkhead then it's back to the drawing board for the Bhoys who have already seen ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe turn down the opportunity to take over.
