Championship play-offs: When is it, the teams and how does it work?

The Sky Bet Championship season is now over with Derby County to join Leeds United, West Brom and Aston Villa in a battle for the final Premier League promotion spot.

Frank Lampard's men earned the final spot in the play-off after victory over West Brom in their final game which saw Middlesbrough and Bristol City's hopes shattered.

Norwich won their final game to be crowned Championship 2018/19 winners who will be joined by runner-ups Sheffield United in Premier League after automatic promotion.

When are the Championship play-offs?

The play-off semi-finals get underway with the first leg on 11 May followed by the second leg on 14 and 15 May.

The winners of play-off semi-finals will then play in the 2019 final on a neutral ground which is scheduled to be played on Monday 27th May.

How does the Championship play-offs work?

The two teams to finish top automatically qualify for Premier League next season with the the final promotion spot competed for by clubs to finish in 3-6th position.

The team to finish 3rd (Leeds United) takes on the team that finished 6th (Derby County) with 4th placed team (West Brom) to take on 5th placed team (Aston Villa) in the semi-final which will have two legs.

The winners of the semi-final stage  earn their play-off spots in the final and their chance to play Premier League next season.

NOTE: Away goals do not count in the play-off semi-final matches  - so if  the second leg ends with both teams tied on aggregate they will play an additional 30 minutes and if it still remains the same it will go to penalty kicks.

Winner A vs Winner B - 27 May - KO time: 3pm BST

Where is Championship final play-off happening?

The Championship play-off final to reach the Premier League will take place on neutral soil at Wembley Stadium with game to kick-off at 3pm BST.

Who won 2018 Championship play-offs?

Last year Fulham won against Aston Villa 1-0 in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium to be promoted to the Premier League alongside Wolves and Cardiff City.

Both Fulham and Aston Villa overcame their semi-final opponents Derby County and Middlesbrough, respectively to meet at Wembley Stadium.
