Charlton sack Nigel Adkins with The Addicks in the League One relegation zone

Charlton have sacked manager Nigel Adkins with the club languishing in the League One relegation after the 3-2 defeat to Accrington Stanley on Wednesday.

Jonnie Jackson has been placed in charge in a caretaker role and will be assisted by Jason Euell.

Adkins was appointed Charlton boss in March and steered the team to a seventh-place finish, missing out on the play-offs due to an inferior goal difference to Oxford United.

But this season they have won just twice in 13 matches and it has prompted Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard to make a change.

Sandgaard said: 'Nigel joined us at the end of last season and had an immediate impact, as we finished the season well, just missing out on a play-off place on goal difference.

'Unfortunately, we haven't been able to carry that form into this season.

'I'd like to thank Nigel for his hard work, positivity and continued professionalism during his time at the club.

We are all disappointed that it hasn't worked out this season and we wish him the very best for the future.'

Jackson has overseen a match as caretaker manager once before, with Charlton winning 3-2 against Bristol Rovers.

The Addicks are back in action on Saturday away to Sunderland, who are second in the League One standings.
