Chelsea’s Malo Gusto “immensely proud” after first France cap

Speaking after making his France debut, Chelsea defender Malo Gusto (20) spoke of an “immense pride” at representing the national team.

Gusto had initially been called up to the U21 side for the international break, however, the Chelsea defender benefitted from multiple injuries. Jules Koundé pulled out after sustaining an injury playing for Barcelona just before the international fixtures, whilst another competitor, Benjamin Pavard, was for once picked as a centre-back.

Jonathan Clauss also got a recall to Didier Deschamps’ side, and it was the Olympique de Marseille full-back who got the nod on Friday night. With France 2-0 up against the Netherlands, and with qualification for Euro 2024 almost secured, Deschamps handed Gusto his first France cap.

In a post-match interview, transcribed by L’Équipe, Gusto reflected on his first match in bleu. “I am immensely proud! It’s a pleasure to represent my country. I hope there will be more [chances],” said the Olympique Lyonnais academy product, who also reacted to Les Bleus’ qualification for the European Championships at the end of the season. “We gave ourselves a little scare at the end of the match, but the most important thing is the qualification, and we have done it,” said Gusto.
