Chelsea cruised into the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 7-1 win over League Two side Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
Match Reports
Reece James starred on his debut and Callum Hudson-Odoi marked his return with a goal as Frank Lampard picked up a first home win as Chelsea boss with a resounding 7-1 EFL Cup victory against Grimsby Town on Wednesday.
The Blues had lost back-to-back matches at Stamford Bridge and were winless there in four under Lampard, but they made light work of their League Two visitors, scoring seven goals in the competition for the first time since 1960-61.
James was one of three full debutants to start for Chelsea and played a part in three of his side's goals, including a strike of his own inside the final 10 minutes.
Matt Green's goal had given Grimsby some hope following quick-fire strikes from Ross Barkley and Michy Batshuayi.
But Pedro scored from the spot before half-time and further goals followed from Kurt Zouma, James, Batshuayi and the returning Hudson-Odoi in the second half as Chelsea returned to winning ways.
Match Events
4' GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Grimsby Town (Barkley)
BARKLEY GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD! Clifton just couldn't get close to Barkley when he got the ball from Pedro. Barkley took it past him with his first touch before hitting his low shot into the net at the near post from the edge of the six-yard box. 1-0 Chelsea!
7' GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Grimsby Town (Batshuayi)
AND IT'S TWO! Batshuayi has his back to goal on the penalty spot when James crosses the ball to him and turns brilliantly before firing his shot past McKeown and into the back of the net. 2-0 Chelsea!
19' GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Grimsby Town (Green)
GREEN PULLS ONE BACK FOR GRIMSBY! A goal-kick from McKeown is flicked down by Hanson and his strike partner latches onto the loose ball. He takes a touch before firing his shot over Caballero and into the roof of the net. 2-1!
28' Batshuayi's header wide out
43' Penalty Goal! Chelsea 3-1 Grimsby Town (Pedro)
PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Chelsea put a corner into the box and Green grabs Zouma around his waist and tugs him to the ground in front of the referee. He's in no doubt as he quickly points to the spot.
PEDRO SCORES FROM THE SPOT! It's a confident take from Chelsea's captain as he sends the keeper the wrong way and nestles his penalty into the bottom left corner. 3-1 Chelsea!
56' GOAL! Chelsea 4-1 Grimsby Town (Zouma)
IT'S FOUR! The cross into the six-yard box from James is brilliant and Zouma gets ahead of his defender and sticks out a leg to get on the end of it and poke the ball past McKeown and into the bottom corner. 4-1 Chelsea!
65' Pulisic's powerful strike wide out
82' GOAL! Chelsea 5-1 Grimsby Town (James)
JAMES MAKES IT FIVE! Once again, Grimsby don't clear their lines properly from a corner and the ball bounces off Davis and straight to James on the edge of the box. He takes a touch before driving his shot into the bottom right corner to score his first goal for the club. 5-1!
86' GOAL! Chelsea 6-1 Grimsby Town (Batshuayi)
BATSHUAYI GETS HIS SECOND! Nobody is picking him up on the right side of the box and he lifts his effort over McKeown who is rushing off his line and into the back of the net. 6-1 Chelsea!
88' GOAL! Chelsea 7-1 Grimsby Town (Hudson-Odoi)
HUDSON-ODOI ADDS TO THE TALLY! He takes Hewitt the wrong way before cutting back onto his left foot and drilling his shot past McKeown at his near post to make it seven. 7-1 Chelsea!

Where are the guys that say the youth cant be trusted and we should rely on the older players. Goals without older players = 4, Goals with older players = 3. Stop your agist views. Some key performers out there, many motm nominations possible. Reece coming in with like a goal and 2 or 3 assists which is what we have all been crying for from the fullback. Odoi getting his goal and being a threat all of the 2nd half. Barkley stamping his authority when in his right role as the 10. Gilmour basically running midfield solo. But most importantly, Kurt Zouma proves that he is captain material and even before being given the armband, the guy took so much responsibility on himself. All the hate he got from this fanbase and he still gives everything and the whole defence was controlled by him tonight. Future captain will definitely be Zouma if he stays.... Zouma and Tomori so far has looked like our best pairing. Even Guehi who was a bit shaky looked good next to Zouma as did Tomori. Zouma is an exceptional defender if people back him and let him grow into the season, he has always been someone who grows into the season but once he is ready, he is unstoppable.... MOTM for me is Zouma, at such a young age for a captain, he stepped up and took responsibility even with Pedro on the field before too. 2 players that I wasnt that impressed with was Pedro who failed to stamp his authority against a league 2 side and Pulisic who was for most the match playing for himself than the team... With Pulisic I understand his desperation but Pedro is a player the youth will look to as a leader and he was struggling to break Grimsby down, at this rate our teams average age by next year will be 22 π π

I think chelsea fans shouldnt lose their patience because lampard is perfect. You don't want a short term success, rather take a seat and try to support lampard has he tries to create a winning squad just like liverpool. Chelsea wont get trophies overnight, they should lose matches and find out mistakes, correct it and repeat. In this way not only lampard can find out the squad lacking but also sign player accordingly and let go of unecessary players Alex ferguson and klopp two coaches' work i really admire, with such patience and amazing fans to back them up they created a fantastic squad that once used to be nearly unbeatable and the other unbeatable Lampard is of the same category but patience is key, never try to bring him down instead try to voice your opinion and support lampard, surely you guys want consistency not short-term success otherwise great game lots of potential, it's just a matter of time before chelsea returns to their glory days
