Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel demands investigation into social media abuse of Mason Mount

Thomas Tuchel has called for a full investigation into social media abuse directed at Mason Mount following Chelsea's FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool.

Mount, 23, missed the decisive spot-kick in the penalty shootout, with Alisson Becker guessing the right way in sudden death as Liverpool won 6-5.

The Blues midfielder was subsequently the focus of abuse on social media with online trolls labelling Mount a 'bottle job', the sole reason Chelsea lost a second domestic cup final of the season and was told in some quarters to 'f*** off'.

Another user described Mount as the 'most protected player of all time' following the furious backlash to the abuse, which has been led by Tuchel.

'Nothing I can say will stop these guys doing it,' an irritated Tuchel told reporters in the aftermath.

'I don't understand social media anyway. It has a huge impact and I don't get it.

'I'm not on social media and it keeps me healthy, more healthy than I would be on it. It's a very thin ice for everybody who is in such a spotlight to be out there.

'Abuse is not acceptable, be it here or on social media.

'If someone thinks he has the right to write it, we will not be able to stop him — but maybe we can investigate.'

Cesar Azpilicueta had missed earlier in the shootout for Chelsea but it was Mount's decisive kick that drew the ire of some fans on social media.

Mount's midfield partner Jorginho was quick to try and lift the spirits of his younger team-mate when it became apparent he was being blamed for the loss.

'Love you brother,' Jorginho wrote on Instagram. 'Keep your head up brother!'

Tuchel added that a missed penalty - Mount also missed a penalty in a Carabao Cup last-16 game in 2020 - will have zero bearing on his opinion of the 23-year-old, who has gone on to establish himself as a mainstay in Chelsea's side in recent seasons.

Tuchel continued: 'The penalty will not change my opinion about Mason.

'If you see the importance of games that he plays consistently for us, he is a key figure in this squad and club.

'He is a super nice guy and we don't start doubting now because he misses a penalty.'

Mount has two years remaining on his contract at Chelsea but it is understood the club are keen to tie the homegrown midfielder down on fresh terms.
