Chelsea clauses could deny players millions each after Nottingham Forest humiliation

Chelsea's players are facing a wage reduction of up to £2million each after their 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest left their Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread

Chelsea's players are staring at a potential loss of up to £2million each if they fail to secure Champions League qualification.

The Blues' chances of claiming a place in Europe's elite club competition suffered another massive setback on Monday, as they slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. It marked their sixth consecutive Premier League loss and left them stuck in ninth place on 48 points from 35 fixtures this season.

If Villa triumph in the Europa League and finish fifth, the side that finishes sixth in the top flight will also gain entry to the Champions League. While Chelsea are only four points adrift of current sixth-place holders Bournemouth with three games remaining, it's appearing more and more improbable that the Blues will accumulate sufficient points to bridge that gap.

Should Chelsea consequently miss out on a seat at Europe's top table, their players are bracing themselves for a substantial pay cut, according to The Sun. It's reported that contractual clauses are understood to slash wages by between £30,000 and £40,000 in the absence of Champions League football - and they now look set to be triggered.

Chelsea have earned approximately £100m from competing in the Champions League this season, factoring in prize money, additional matchday income and sponsor bonuses. By comparison, the Blues pocketed around £15m for capturing the Conference League in 2025, while Tottenham secured £21m for claiming the Europa League.

Each Chelsea player will have different clauses written into their contract, with club captain Reece James, for instance, signing a contract extension in March which reduced his basic £250,000-per-week salary but aligned him with the incentive-based wage structure introduced by the BlueCo ownership group.

And with the Chelsea players potentially forfeiting between £30,000 to £40,000 per week - equivalent to roughly £2m annually - the club would be making savings in excess of £50m given the size of the current squad. Chelsea were second best for large spells of Monday's defeat to Forest, with Joao Pedro netting their solitary goal in stoppage time after Taiwo Awoniyi's double and Igor Jesus' spot-kick had put the Reds 3-0 ahead.

Speaking after the match, the club's interim manager Calum McFarlane was incensed by his side's showing. "The first 15 minutes were unacceptable. The manner of the two goals conceded really set us back and gave us a mountain to climb," he said. "It's a ruthless game, it's a really high level.

"We cannot start games in the Premier League like this. We're training tomorrow, we'll review the game and try to find a reason why and try to make sure the performance level is higher against Liverpool in five days' time."

Chelsea have three Premier League fixtures remaining. They travel to Liverpool before welcoming Tottenham and concluding the top-flight campaign with a trip to Sunderland. Alongside this, the Blues face Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
