Frank Lampard has lost a Champions League winner from his backroom staff, with Eddie Newton agreeing to join Trabzonspor as assistant manager.

The Londoner was by Roberto Di Matteo's side at the Allianz Arena in 2012 when Chelsea lifted to the European Cup for the first time, and was also Guus Hiddink's assistant.

Newton leaves his role within the Blues' coaching staff to link up once again with former Chelsea men John Obi Mikel and Daniel Sturridge, acting as Huseyin Cimsir's assistant.

A Chelsea youth product himself, former Blues midfielder Newton was the loan player technical coach between 2016 and 2019 - checking in with stars such as Tammy Abraham, Andreas Christensen and Reece James as they developed away from West London side.

Newton played at Stamford Bridge as a midfielder from 1992 to 1999, featuring alongside Gianfranco Zola and Ruud Gullit.

The Englishman scored at Wembley as Chelsea beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup final in 1997, and his career is fondly remembered in West London.

He'll see familiar faces when he touches down in Turkey, after both Sturridge and Mikel joined Trabzonspor in the summer.

Sturrdige spent four years at Chelsea, playing a bit-part role for most his spell as he amassed 94 appearances and 24 goals before moving on to Liverpool, where he was far more successful.

The striker played just 20 minutes of the Blues' fairytale 2012 European campaign, but was celebrating on the pitch in Munich alongside John Obi Mikel, who had the more memorable Chelsea career.

The Nigerian made 372 appearances among some of Chelsea's greatest teams, earning two Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, and winning the Europa League as his second European triumph.

Both men have featured prominently in this seasons Super Lig, with Sturridge contributing four goals and four assists in nine games in Turkey.
