Chelsea involved in Twitter's 'Didn't Happen of the Year Awards' on Kepa & Sarri

Chelsea have got involved in Twitter's 'Didn't Happen of the Year Awards' to fuel theories that Kepa Arrizabalaga was disrespecting his former manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Blues shot-stopper appeared to publicly defy ex-boss Sarri and refuse to be substituted in extra time in the EFL Cup defeat by Manchester City in February.

Arrizabalaga went down injured as penalties approached, seemingly struggling with cramp, prompting Sarri to prepare Willy Caballero to replace him.

But the 24-year-old rose to his feet and waved away the substitution and insisted he was fit enough to carry on.

Sarri's furious reaction - he threw a bottle to the ground and stormed off towards the dressing rooms before turning back - suggested his goalkeeper had purposefully ignored him but he later insisted it was down to a misunderstanding.

And Chelsea's Tweet referring to Sarri's explanation of the incident has featured in the social media awards that refer to things that 'didn't happen'.

The Tweet read: 'Maurizio Sarri says the Kepa substitution confusion was "a big understanding" because he thought the player had cramp. However he says Kepa was right that he could continue although the way he went about it was wrong. Sarri needs to talk to Kepa now.

The official Twitter account of the Blues responded to Group A of the social media awards on Wednesday with the post: 'Tough group'.

'Kepa by Chelsea' has been placed in a group with Rebekah Vardy's denial to Coleen Rooney.
