Partey was on our transfer wishlist for 7 months before we signed him. If we were to sign him earlier we would have stalled the Gabriel deal and went for him first instead. We tried to sign Aouar after signing Gabriel but it never materialised because we set a ceiling price (which was £35m) for Aouar's transfer fee and Lyon didn't want to lower their asking price. We did that for a reason - we were short on funds that's why we pursued Jorginho but didn't make any serious attempt to sign him because he wasn't Arteta's top priority. So on deadline day Arteta went straight to Kroenke and asked for more cash so that he could sign Partey. Stingy Stan approved it so we went ahead and triggered his release clause.
