Chelsea player ratings: Chelsea crushed by Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic

Chelsea were crushed by Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic in their friendly in Notre Dame, leaving Enzo Maresca still searching for his first win as Blues boss.

The Scottish champions won 4-1 as the scale of the challenge facing Maresca was underlined.

Even if this was only pre-season, it is embarrassing for Chelsea to ship four goals in any setting.

Here, Mail Sport runs you through who impressed – and who didn’t – from the United States.

Robert Sanchez – 5

There was one super save to deny Kyogo but otherwise, Sanchez hardly stood a chance as his defence deserted him. Still not sure if he can pass the way that his manager wants.

Reece James – 5.5

Still getting used to his new inverted role and Celtic targeted the space he was leaving whenever he moved into midfield, which we are bound to see over the upcoming season.

Wesley Fofana – 5

Will provide a threat from set-pieces but still needs to build up his fitness based on what we saw here. This was his first start in more than a year.

Benoit Badiashile – 4

Committed a howler for Celtic’s third goal, sending a pass straight into the feet of Luis Palma. Even if this was only a friendly, he wanted the ground to swallow him up.

Levi Colwill – 5

Thankfully didn’t engage in any scraps like with Wrexham’s James McClean. Had to be wary of the constant balls in behind coming from Celtic and occasionally could have been more alert.

Romeo Lavia – 6

Good to see him getting minutes in midfield, where he can turn on the ball and pick a pass. Hope for his sake that he can have a much better season than the injury-ravaged last.

Carney Chukwuemeka – 5

One of three Chelsea players removed at the break, having been the only player to play the full 90 minutes against Wrexham. Nothing in return for his efforts.

Noni Madueke – 5.5

Fluffed an excellent chance to score after being set up by Raheem Sterling. Threatened down the right but clearly reliant on his left foot.

Christopher Nkunku – 7

Two goals in two pre-season games, having dispatched a penalty here. Great to see him looking so sharp as he targets a season free of injuries after a horrendous last campaign.

Mykhailo Mudryk – 5

The odd flash on the ball down the left, including when he sprinted beyond his man and fired a cross through the box, but otherwise limited. Hooked at half-time.

Marc Guiu – 7

Finishing could do with some work but hard not to be impressed by Guiu, who is only 18 and yet is showing the type of physicality needed for the Premier League.

Raheem Sterling (for Mudryk, 45 mins) – 7

Immediately injected life into this Chelsea team down the left. Unlucky not to get himself a goal when he struck the post shortly after coming on, and then won the penalty.

Lesley Ugochukwu (for Chukwuemeka, 45 mins) – 6

Forever willing to try to get forward as Chelsea made improvements for the second half… until they started conceding again.

Tosin Adarabioyo (for Fofana, 45 mins) – 5

Adventurous roaming, even pressing Celtic’s players as far as their own box in one moment. Let Michael Johnston escape him easily for the fourth goal.

Malo Gusto (for James, 67 mins) – 5

Just like Reece James, Gusto is still trying to get to grips with the inverted role. So far, we haven’t seen it suit his skillset, so there’s work to do there.

Andrey Santos (for Lavia, 67 mins) – 6

The odd sharp moment but by the time he was introduced, Chelsea were on their way to a hiding.
