Chelsea vs Atletico: Los Rojiblancos know what they need to do

On Wednesday night, Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid need to go to Stamford Bridge and come away with a win, which is no easy task but something they do have experience of.

Back in 2014 the two clubs met at the semi-final stage of the Champions League, and after a 0-0 draw in Madrid Atleti went to London and won 3-1 to book their place in the final.

"I want to thank the mothers of these players, because they gave birth to them with balls this big," Simeone famously said after that win in 2014.

"The reaction of the team will stick in people's memories."

And he was right. Here we are, seven years later, contemplating a similar scenario, except that this time Los Colchoneros know they've done it before.

That said, only Koke and Simeone himself are still around from that experience, and Wednesday's match has the added complication that Chelsea have a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

Atleti know they need to win the match if they are to remain in the competition, so Simeone is expected to go with a slightly more attacking line-up, with Yannick Carrasco and Marcos Llorente stretching the pitch and Joao Felix and Luis Suarez occupying Chelsea's defence.

Breaking down Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea will be no easy matter, as they have conceded just twice in 12 games, so Atleti will need all the firepower they can get.

Chelsea will, though, be missing two players through suspension in Jorginho and Mason Mount, who both started and impressed in the first leg in Bucharest.

Atletico's task is a big one, but history shows us that it isn't insurmountable.
