Chelsea's Europa League win over Frankfurt marred by crowd trouble

Chelsea's Europa League semi-final win over Frankfurt was marred by trouble in the stands as fans from the German club had to be ejected from home areas at Stamford Bridge.

After Luka Jovic had equalised for the visitors in the second half, images showed a long-haired Frankfurt fan being led out of the ground after celebrating the goal.

He could be seen swearing at Chelsea fans as he was led away from the stadium by a steward on Thursday night. It remains unknown how he managed to get inside the home end.

Reports suggest there were several Frankfurt fans who were unable to buy tickets in the away end and therefore were forced to infiltrate the areas for home supporters attending the game.

There also seemed to be some trouble later on in the game as fans were pictured exchanging gestures during what proved to be a nervy semi-final second leg.

One fan was seen pointing in the face of someone a few rows in front while another was caught sticking two fingers up to someone else.

Tensions were obviously running high during the European tie as Chelsea looked to regain the trophy they last won in 2013.

Frankfurt supporters were already making themselves noticed in London this afternoon ahead of the game.

Thousands of fans made the trip from Germany, and Frankfurt posted videos of some of them making their way around the capital in the traditional way.

The club hired red buses for a group to get to the game at Stamford Bridge and the destination on the front said 'Baku via London', the Azerbaijani capital being the host city for this season's final.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened the scoring for the Blues to put them 2-1 in front on aggregate. Jovic then made the most of some poor defending to level the tie again, eventually sending it to penalties.

Star man Eden Hazard went on to dispatch the decisive penalty as Chelsea edged out Frankfurt 4-3 in the shoot-out in west London.

Kepa Arrizabalaga produced two fine saves to spare Cesar Azpilicueta's blushes, as the Blues captain missed his own spot-kick.

The Spaniard saved Martin Hinteregger's penalty with his knees before palming away a good effort from Gonzalo Pacienca as the Blues set up a showdown with London rivals Arsenal in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.
