Christie: 'Special' win over Milan can give Bournemouth momentum

Ryan Christie was thrilled to deliver on a "special" occasion for the Bournemouth supporters as their perfect start in the Europa League continued with a 3-0 win over AC Milan.

Bournemouth became the first English side to win their first three games in major European competition since Sunderland back in October 1973 with a fine display on Thursday.

Justin Kluivert's early penalty got the Cherries off to the perfect start, with their task made even easier when Mike Maignan was sent off for shoving Tyler Adams in the face.

The incident saw referee Vassilios Fotias point to the penalty spot again, with Lorenzo Torriani's first touch of the ball was to pick Marcus Tavernier's spot-kick out of the Milan net.

Bournemouth's dominance continued after the break, and it was rewarded in the 84th minute when substitute Amine Adli bent a brilliant left-footed free-kick past Torriani's dive.

Marco Rose's side netted twice from the penalty spot in the first half of a game (any competition) for the first time since November 2024 against Wolves in the Premier League.

And just 16 years after competing in the fourth tier, Bournemouth earned a seismic win over seven-time European champions Milan, with Christie describing the Cherries' rise up until this point as "incredible".

"What a game. The boys spoke about it before the game. Listen, it's a special game for the club, but it becomes a lot more special if you go and win the game," Christie said.

"Amazing, it's been such an experience playing in Europe, the fans have been amazing, the whole infrastructure the club have brought, in terms of the whole atmosphere coming into the game and last week as well. It's incredible. It's a run of good results now, we need to keep going.

"It's mega. In terms of the history of the club, it's ridiculous. Someone told me today, 15 years ago, today we were 17th in League One, I think, so it's pretty incredible.

"So many of these fans have been here for this journey, so to have matches like this and win as well is special."

But so soon after a memorable win in Europe, Bournemouth's attention will now turn to the Premier League, with an out-of-form Manchester United up next.

The Cherries registered their first Premier League win of the season last time out against Sunderland and are looking for consecutive league wins for the first time since May.

Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last three Premier League visits to Old Trafford (W2 D1), scoring at least three goals in every match, the only team to ever achieve that in three visits in a row to the Red Devils in the league.

The last team to score 3+ goals in four away Premier League games in a row against an opponent were Manchester City at Newcastle United from 2020-21 to 2023-24.

And despite an indifferent start to their league campaign, Christie believes the magnitude of Bournemouth's result against Milan can be used as a platform to build on.

"Now that we've got that bit of momentum. I think it's crucial when you've got so many games, one after the other, you just try and roll into the next one and keep the positivity," Christie added ahead of this weekend's trip to Old Trafford.

"With the amount of games we've got, the gaffer has to use everyone in the squad and, to be fair, everyone has shown they can be called upon, the boys that came in.

"Incredible tonight to come in and perform like that against a top team. Positivity going into the weekend."
