The latest on Christopher Nkunku and his injury with the Chelsea attacker set for months on the sidelines with a serious meniscus problem that could require surgery
Christopher Nkunku is set to miss multiple months of action after suffering a meniscus injury in Chelsea's final pre-season game against Borussia Dortmund last week.
The 25-year-old started against the Black and Yellow but he was brought off after just 22 minutes of action. There were concerns over the pitch at the Soldier Field in Chicago prior to the game and whether or not it had anything to do with Nkunku's injury is unclear but the supporters' worst fear became a reality when the France international limped off.
Now, football.london has been told, Nkunku faces months on the sideline with a meniscus injury after colliding with Dortmund defender Mats Hummels. It comes as a huge blow after the £52million signing massively impressed throughout Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States.
Nkunku is set to have more scans in the coming days and then we should discover just how long he will be out of action for. As well as this, the Frenchman, who was signed from RB Leipzig earlier in the summer transfer window, may require surgery on his knee.
There was an expectation Nkunku would play in the No.10 role behind Nicolas Jackson, as Mauricio Pochettino had been trialling in pre-season, but Chelsea will have to look for other options now for the opening chapter of the campaign. Carney Chukwuemeka is an option there, with the England Under-20 international also enjoying an impressive pre-season tour.
But without Nkunku, Chelsea are certainly worse off. The France attacker, speaking in an interview with the club's media team after signing, revealed his excitement about working in Chelsea's ambitious project.
"I think the project was good for me," Nkunku said. "It is a good project for me to develop myself as a player and a man also.
"And this is a good city, after all, and for sure I want to improve in football and I want to win trophies and improve myself also. So I think this is a good project for me at this moment. This is a good project, for sure."
