Cole Palmer is Man City's newest star in the making but who is the 21-year-old and how can he breakthrough into Pep Guardiola's Treble-winning side of trophy hunters next season?

Cole Palmer came off the bench to score the goal that Manchester City supporters thought had won them the Community Shield.

Leandro Trossard struck late to take the match to penalties with Arsenal eventually winning the shootout, but it was another strong cameo appearance from City's academy graduate.

The 21-year-old is continuing his rise and is making a claim for more regular first-team minutes following Riyad Mahrez's departure for Saudi Arabia.

The left-footed attacker is a product in the making under Pep Guardiola and will be hoping to carve out a similar rise to Phil Foden, but what can City fans truly expect from Palmer?

Mail Sport's Kieran Gill provides an in-depth analysis on Palmer in a Q and A below.

Who is he and where did he come from?

Palmer, 21, is a local lad from Wythenshawe, Manchester. He came through the City academy after joining at Under-8s level but was invited to start training with the first team from June 2020.

Being surrounded by so much talent has helped him develop, with Pep Guardiola previously predicting he ‘will be an exceptional player’. High praise indeed, and he repaid his manager’s faith with Sunday’s super strike.

What’s his style?

Palmer is a technically gifted left-footed attacker who, as we saw here, knows where the goal is.

He can play as an attacking midfielder or a striker and Guardiola promoted Palmer to his senior squad after seeing him score 15 goals and assist five more in only 14 Under-18 Premier League games. He made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup fourth-round win over Burnley in September 2020.

Has anyone tried to sign him from City?

Brighton were interested in the summer after he helped England win the European Under-21 Championship.

City have been unwilling to sell Palmer but were said to be open to loaning him out, triggering a race that also saw Burnley and Leicester linked. He could yet leave in this window.

What did Guardiola say about him on Sunday?

‘Tomorrow he is going to train with us,’ Guardiola said when asked about Palmer on Sunday.

'We have a lot of confidence in him. He wanted to play more last season. He didn’t play much. The agent, himself, we have to talk to the club. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It is a total player.’
