Comparing Unai Emery’s record at Aston Villa to Steven Gerrard’s after the same number of games
Unai Emery has now taken charge of as many Premier League games at Aston Villa as his predecessor Steven Gerrard – and the stark difference in results really underlines the club’s remarkable transformation.
Gerrard was sacked last October after 11 months at Villa Park. He took charge of 38 Premier League games – exactly a season’s worth – and in that time, Villa accumulated just 44 points. Given that, it was no great surprise that he lost his job, given the investment and ambition.
There was the odd glimmer of hope that the Liverpool legend could enjoy success at Villa Park, particularly as marquee signing Philippe Coutinho enjoyed a bright start, but he struggled to guide the team to a sustained run of form. And Villa were particularly poor in the first few months of the 2022-23 campaign, sitting just above the relegation zone when the decision was made to replace Gerrard.
“The board has come to this decision following a full evaluation of results and performances over the calendar year,” said Christian Purslow in a club statement at the time.
“We were clear when we appointed Steven that we set an objective of continuous improvement but that has not been achieved despite everybody’s best efforts and we believe the time is right to make these changes now.”
Fast forward just over a year and Gerrard’s successor has led Villa into the top four for the first time since 2009. They’re just two points off the top of the table after making an exceptional start to the 2023-24 campaign.
The former Arsenal coach did not take long to make an impact. Their form swiftly turned around, and from there Emery guided the club to qualification for the Europa Conference League with an exceptional seventh-place finish.
Having now taken a full season’s worth of games, we now have a large enough sample size to see that Emery’s Villa are no flash in the pan. Having picked up 77 points over that time, they’ve comfortably been good enough to qualify for the Champions League. Their challenge now is to maintain those lofty standards for the remainder of the season.
Here’s how Emery’s record after 38 games compares to Gerrard’s:
Unai Emery
Wins: 24
Draws: 5
Losses: 9
Points: 77
Goals Scored: 71
Goals Conceded: 44
Clean Sheets: 11
Steven Gerrard
Wins: 12
Draws: 8
Losses: 18
Points: 44
Goals Scored: 45
Goals Conceded: 50
Clean Sheets: 10

Emery is far better... he needed more time with arsenal

I'm not sure Aston Villa can make to 4. Wait and see what happens before end of January 2024. We saw Emery made some glimpse of wonder at Arsenal, but he collapsed like Tottenham Hotspur.

I think the period Emery worked at Arsenal, he used it to really study the epl, and he is cooking something now at villa. kudos to him

please remember Emery is a proven coach over and extended period. Steven is a young and upcoming coach. so there's no comparison. Steven is learning. Emery is already a scholar. Liverpool to the world.
Gerrard is just not Good enough.

Guy you reasoned like a coach. Emery inherited a better A. Villa than that of Gerrard.
He made a difference instantly with the same players that Gerrard had. Gerrard seems clueless

What is this comparison lol. Emery is obviously a far better coach because of his experience with psg, Sevilla, and other clubs while steveg is just learning.

Shallow reason! Gerard failed at Villa just as Emery failed at Arsenal. But overall Emery is by far the best proven and decorated coach than Gerard. Gerard is just a new recruit to the system.
Great reasoning my guy. Your analysis is very good 👍👍

Without a doubt, Emery's project is amazing despite his stint at arsenal, look at what he built during his time with the submarines in Spain

Emery has been very good at managing teams which play in the Europa league but wanna see him doing the same for a team playing in the Champions league.
those teams so called big teams they have their own ambitions, the moment you reach to team you have to win truphies if you fail they fire you...,so since Arsenal fired him they have only won FA and community shield but won already Europer league trophy with Villarreal fc still Arsenal looking for that big truphy [byebye][byebye][byebye][byebye][byebye]so Arsenal and U.Emery who is better than the other...👈👈

Your a Sucker. I knew he managed them, but there is no need to compare Unai and Gerrard.. Unnecessary stunt. Unai is doing great with this villa team. Biased English media always showing silly comparison
