Courtois vs Oblak: A derby over the La Liga Golden Glove

Jan Oblak and Thibaut Courtois are the main contenders for this season's Zamora trophy which is awarded to the LaLiga Santander goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded according to the number of games played.

The two shot-stoppers are followed by Athletic Club's Unai Simon who has impressed with his performances between the posts in the 2019/20 campaign.

Oblak has won the last four Zamora prizes, with Courtois getting the award in 2012/13 and 2013/14 when he plied his trade at Atletico Madrid.

The Slovenia international tops the list although his ratio (0.78) is worse than the Belgian's (0.67), as the goalkeepers should play a minimum of 28 games, during which they must have played at least 60 minutes of the matches.

Oblak has conceded 21 goals in 27 matches while Courtois has allowed in 16 goals in 24 ties and Simon has conceded 20 in 24 (0.83).

If the Belgium international maintains his current ratio in the next four games, he will have the chance to overtake his Atletico counterpart.

No Real Madrid goalkeeper has won the award since 2007/8, when Iker Casillas was crowned the best shot-stopper in the league.

The two times Courtois managed to receive the Zamora, he registered a ratio of 0.78 and 0.65 goals conceded in 2012/13 and 2013/14, respectively.

Should he win the prize as a Real Madrid player, he will become the third goalkeeper to win it with two different teams after Ricardo Zamora (Espanyol and Real Madrid) and Santiago Canizares (Celta Vigo and Valencia).

Courtois has already won the 2016/17 Premier League Golden Glove with Chelsea and the 2018 World Cup Golden Glove with Belgium.

Although he struggled to adapt to his new environment following his arrival in 2018, the Belgian has improved this season after Keylor Navas' departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

"If you want to be a Real Madrid goalkeeper you have to know how to accept this pressure," he told MARCA back in October 2019.

This year he has turned himself into one of the most vital cogs in Zidane's machine and he has assisted Real Madrid's efforts in competing for the league title.
