Crewe coach suspended over safeguarding issues

Crewe Alexandra were plunged into further crisis on Wednesday after it emerged that their head of foundation has been suspended following a safeguarding issue.

Carl Everall, a coach at the club's academy since 2013, has also been barred from all football-related activities by the Football Association, who have launched an investigation into allegations regarding his behaviour.

Cheshire Police declined to comment but an FA spokesman described the situation as 'a safeguarding and police matter'.

Everall, who started a full-time role at Crewe 14 months ago, states that he was previously an academy coach at Port Vale on an internet employment profile.

The development comes with the Crewe director of football Dario Gradi yet to return to work after he was suspended by the FA in December 2016. Gradi employed Barry Bennell, the coach jailed for 30 years in February for a series of sexual attacks on boys at Crewe and Manchester City.

A Crewe statement said 'all relevant and appropriate procedures have been followed'.
