Cristian Romero clarifies Tottenham future after Real Madrid transfer enquiry

Cristian Romero has declared he wants to win a trophy with Tottenham despite transfer links to Real Madrid.  Los Blancos reportedly made an enquiry for the World Cup and Copa America-winning central defender in June via his representatives but the Champions League winners are yet to follow up their interest.  Furthermore, Spurs view vice-captain Romero as an integral part of their plans under Ange Postecoglou and even if a big-money offer was to arrive, it would likely be rejected as there is no appetite to entertain transfer discussions.  But it appears the 26-year-old is more than happy to stay in north London anyway after reaffirming his commitment to the club during an interview with Argentinian TV.

Romero told ESPN F90 : "I always strive to play at my best. I have a lot of respect for Tottenham. They've always given me a lot of support here, so I like playing here. I don't think about other clubs or their possibilities.  "I know there's a lot of talk about a possible move, but I'm calm. At my club I play differently to the national team, more forward. I still have years left in Europe and I want to see where I can go. Hopefully this year we can win a title at Tottenham."  Romero still has three years left to run on his current Spurs deal, which expires in the summer of 2027. There could be changes to Tottenham's backline before the transfer window closes later this month, however.  AC Milan are continuing to pursue right-back Emerson Royal and Postecoglou hinted earlier this week that Djed Spence could stay at the club following loan spells with Leeds United and Genoa in Serie A.

Spence looked destined to leave Spurs on a permanent transfer this summer but the marauding wing-back is understood to have made a real impression during pre-season and could therefore take Emerson's place, if he does depart for Italy.  Tottenham have looked at a number of right-backs including AS Monaco's Vanderson as potential options in the market, though they're not believed to be tracking Manchester City's former Luton Town loanee Issa Kabore contrary to reports.  A striker remains a top priority for Spurs in the window this month with Bournemouth hotshot Dominic Solanke among the key names of interest. Richarlison is currently expected to stay at the club, barring a drastic U-turn, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League.  Eberechi Eze and Pedro Neto also have admirers at Tottenham but both attackers would likely cost in the region of £60million. Spurs are also yet to follow up interest in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
