Ralf Rangnick dropped Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for Manchester United's Premier League clash with Burnley on Tuesday night.
The interim manager decided to start Edison Cavani ahead of Ronaldo - who has struggled to find the net in Manchester United's last four games.
Rangnick said that Cavani would be better at 'chasing the ball' down against Burnley and even suggested he would be better at performing repeat sprints.
When asked why he dropped Ronaldo to the bench ahead of United's clash with Burnley, Rangnick said: 'Today it will require a lot of sprinting and chasing a lot of balls.
'A lot of fighting for second balls and I think this profile fits perfectly for Edison. That's why I decided to start him today. We will also need Cristiano to start in the next couple of games.'
Peter Crouch referred to Rangnick's decision as a 'big call' and questioned how Ronaldo would take the news.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, the BT Sport pundit said: 'It's a big call. I'm not sure how well Cristiano is going to take that.
'Look, I love Cavani. Just his moment. His movement when the ball is out wide, it's brilliant. His heading and his finishing is a joy to watch.'
Crouch's concern comes after Ronaldo reacted badly to being substituted by Rangnick against Brentford last month.
He was taken off the pitch when Manchester United were wining 2-0. Despite his side's advantage, Ronaldo was less than impressed to be leaving the field in the 71st minute.
Speaking after the game, Rangnick said: 'I don't blame him for that but obviously any manager would wish it shouldn't be too emotional and also in front of the TV cameras I don't think this will be for the benefit of anyone: not to his benefit or teammates.
'It's an emotional game and players are emotional and I didn't take it personally at all.'
