Cristiano Ronaldo bows out of Euro 2020 as the top scorer

Portugal haven't managed to defend their European Championship title, with Belgium overcoming the Euro 2016 winners 1-0 in the last 16 on Sunday night. That means Cristiano Ronaldo is already out of the tournament, even if he is the top scorer at this point with his five goals from the group stage.

Ronaldo didn't make much of an impact against Belgium, even if he did have one first half freekick that Thibaut Courtois had to push to safety.

With his 14 total European Championship goals, he is the top scorer in the history of the competition. With 109 overall for Portugal's senior side, the No.7 has matched Ali Daei as the all-time leading scorer in international football.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo play in another European Championship?

You can never rule Ronaldo out, but this might have been his last European Championship. Now 36, he'll be 39 when the next European Championship comes around in 2024.

Euro 2020 was Ronaldo's fifth appearance at the finals of the continent's main national team tournament, having been present in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 as well.

He has won the tournament once in 2016, finished as a runner-up once in 2004, reached the semi-finals once in 2012, reached the quarter-finals once in 2008 and then he has had this year's experience, exiting at the last 16.

Straight to the dressing room

After greeting a few of the other players on the pitch, Ronaldo went straight to the dressing room after the elimination at La Cartuja.

Other Portugal players went to applaud the fans, but Ronaldo went to the dressing room. An elimination hurts, even at the age of 36 and having won the previous edition.

It's just one and a half years until the World Cup in Qatar, so that is the next objective for the No.7. That is the only major trophy he still hasn't won.
