Teddy Sheringham reckons new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim could do worse than bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
But the former striker reckons Ronaldo is now so focused on his brand away from football that he might not be too keen on a coaching job at his former club.
Ronaldo continues to score prolifically for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League but he has recently spoken about coming to terms with retirement appearing on the horizon.
And with Amorim, who led Sporting Lisbon to a stunning win over Manchester City on Tuesday night in the Champions League, taking control at United next week Sheringham thinks the new boss should extend a hand to Ronaldo., whom he formerly called a team-mate with Portugal.
“Cristiano Ronaldo would be very welcome back at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he is onto bigger and better things," Sheringham told FlashScore.
He continued: "I think that Ronaldo will follow in the path of David Beckham in doing things away from coaching, higher profile things around the world. I'm sure he'd be very, very welcome in any capacity coming back to the club, but I doubt that he'll be a coach."
Sheringham has also claimed that United might have done worse than offering the managerial vacancy to Roy Keane after sacking Erik ten Hag.
The former captain has not managed since leaving Ipswich Town in 2011, although he has worked as an assistant coach at Aston Villa. Nottingham Forest and with Ireland. He has been among the team’s biggest critics in his role as Sky Sports pundit.
Only last weekend Keane took aim at Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes but Sheringham said: “It’s normally the good talkers that become the best managers so I would’ve expected Gary Neville to go on and manage Manchester United until his spell at Valencia put him off.
“I do think that United could’ve done a lot worse than appointing Roy Keane, he would ruffle a few feathers although there is a question mark over whether you can still manage that way.
“But Keane is a leader of men and would take the reins and say follow me. The Manchester United fans would love him in charge, but he’ll have his own reasons for not managing recently.”
