Fresh off their CONCACAF Champions Cup triumph, Cruz Azul isn’t slowing down in the transfer market. The club is actively reshaping its roster ahead of the Apertura 2025, and Serbian striker Luka Jovic is emerging as a top target.

Club chief announces duo to depart

With new signings on the horizon, Cruz Azul has begun trimming its roster. Sporting director Iván Alonso confirmed in a press conference that Greek forward Giorgos Giakoumakis and Uruguayan striker Gabriel “Toro” Fernández will not be part of the team for the upcoming tournament.

There’s interest in both Gabriel and Gio,” Alonso said. “We’re working to find the best outcome for all parties involved.”

Jovic a “dream signing”

One of the most intriguing names linked to La Máquina is Jovic, a striker with extensive European experience, having played for clubs like Benfica, Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, and AC Milan. Alonso acknowledged that signing Jovic would be a dream scenario for the club.

“We’re in the process. He’s not the only option, but he’s certainly a dream signing for the entire institution,” Alonso said. “He’s a highly sought-after player. We’ve done a deep analysis of his game and how he could elevate us as a team.”

When is Cruz Azul’s first Apertura game?

Cruz Azul will kick off their Apertura 2025 campaign this Saturday, June 12, at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario against Mazatlán. The team, led by head coach Nicolás Larcamón, will then travel to face Atlas at the Estadio Jalisco.
