Crystal Palace set to offload out-of-favour striker Sorloth to Gent on loan

Crystal Palace are sending out-of-favour striker Alexander Sorloth to Belgian side Gent on loan, just a year after his £9million move to the Premier League.

The Norwegian striker has scored just one goal for Palace, in the Carabao Cup against Swansea, and his game-time this season has been severely limited.

The return of Connor Wickham to full fitness only pushes Sorloth further down the pecking order, and he is now heading for a short-term loan spell in Belgium.

Sorloth boarded a flight to Benidorm from Gatwick Airport on Tuesday morning, where he will meet up with his new team-mates during their winter training camp.

There is no option to buy in the deal, and Palace will be hopeful that Sorloth can find some form before returning to south London at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old becomes the fourth player to leave the Eagles in the January window, following Jordon Mutch, Jonny Williams and Jason Puncheon out of the exit door.

Mutch had his contract terminated following a loan spell at Vancouver Whitecaps, Williams has joined fellow south Londoners Charlton, while Puncheon has moved to Huddersfield on loan until the end of the season.

Gent had been open in their interest of Sorloth, with manager Jess Thorup commenting on speculation at the weekend.

'I saw that he played on Saturday. (Laughs) Bad news,' he told reporters. 'He has power, pace and can hopefully score some goals. That's what we need.'

For Palace, meanwhile, the search for reinforcements goes on. The Eagles were in for both Dominic Solanke and Michy Batshuayi, before talks fell through.

Everton's Oumar Niasse has also been linked, and sporting director Dougie Freedman is working hard to get an attacking player through the door before the deadline.
