A collective wince could be felt from the away end when Daniel James went haring off to halt Raul Jimenez's progress as Wolves set off on the break.
James was on a booking by this point, when possession ran free and Wolves looked to launch a counter attack.
The night was not exactly going to plan – the yellow card for simulation – and James, a youngster so desperate to impress when he scampered towards Jimenez.
Daniel James will prove an asset to Manchester United with his speed after starting at Wolves
The way his full Manchester United debut was going, this had all the hallmarks of a daft foul from behind and then the second yellow to follow. Don't do it; don't clip him.
But that fear is to forget about this guy's pace, something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as 'the X-Factor'.
The Wolves striker was 10 yards clear – no distance for James, whose dart was so quick he ended up the other side of his target, using his body to retain possession on halfway and halt a dangerous phase of play.
He really is lightning and that will benefit United not only in an offensive sense.
Monday night was by no means perfect for the £15million signing from Swansea, but few should really have expected it to be either.
James had a fairytale start to life at club by scoring against Chelsea but hard work starts now
Chelsea was a fairytale off the bench, an outpouring of emotion at the loss of his father, Kevan, over the summer, and a glimpse of things to come.
Wolves away, in the hostile Molineux environment, is a different task altogether and James will learn a lot from these evenings.
Let us not forget this is a winger who might have been turning out for Yeovil Town on loan last year, a team who dropped out of the Football League in May.
The Welsh winger needs to stop being so cute and go looking for fouls from defenders
James earned a yellow card for simulation in the draw at Molineux against Wolves
There will be an element of learning on the job and Solskjaer knows that. James will learn to be cuter, not to go looking for fouls with quite such eagerness.
It took eight minutes for the Sir Jack Hayward Stand to mercilessly boo the 21-year-old for going down easily. Jon Moss then booked it for another apparent dive.
'He was fouled for the first one,' Solskjaer said. 'He's that quick and gets kicked so many times that it's natural for him to protect himself. How many fouls did he suffer today? I've no problem that sometimes he tries to protect himself.'
What is promising is James refused to hide, which is what will please United most. He ended up a potent threat down the right towards full-time, jinking and weaving, driving at the byline.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended James and insisted he was protecting himself

He lacks creativity and composure in the final third and that’s why I prefer mason greenwood we seem to be more threatening when he is inthe top 3 because all 3 players can switch positions and over masons two feet it’s not a problem he’s a great finisher he’ll add fluidity and movement and instead of it just being martial and rashford swapping positions it’ll be more, pogba i don’t think deserves to take penalties I think rashford should have every penalty he knows how to bury it and pogba should be playing alongside the attacking midfielder higher up the pitch mctominay sits deeper and makes a back 3 as the two full backs push higher up the pitch imagine mason greenwood martial and rashford all cutting into the box making dummy runs for the full back to squeeze the life out of their opponents we’ll have a much more creative attack
also mason was a midfielder when younger if I'm not wrong. I wonder if he can replace lingard/Pereira for a no 10. imagine today's 4 2 3 1 with the front 4 as greenwood, martial , rash and james. also Gomes can play as no 10 and he is way better than lingard especially with creativity

beautiful. glad to know you are a United fan. I mentioned the same about greenwood in an earlier post. I still remember that natural ability display against intet Milan especially that slick turn and exquisite RVPish finish. hes more naturally gifted than rashford imo.

Hope he stays fit and ok and is not worn out game after game. Ole needs to do something about that left side coz it's proven to be a weak link to opponents attacking for goals.

I left my home to watch Manchester United my team, The joy Daniel James brings to everyone’s heart was unbelievable, even Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal fans love this boy. Playing Wolves away is not a joke. Only Manchester City can break them easily. So everyone hailed United for a very good away match last night. We’ve got Rashford, James, Martial, Greenwood, Wan Bissaka, McTominay, Gomez, Pererra, Dalot, please let’s enjoy these loads of young talents we have. Manchester United will be great again.

having defenders take yellow cards cos of your pace doesn't make you special...he needs to affect the games more...as for Vs Wolves....Dan James didn't impress me. Looking forward to the next game already...he's got lotta stuffs to learn

The mistake the coach made was allowing James to start. He should have waited till second half just like Chelsea match. When Adama came in for Wolves second half, the game change. This attacking mindset of Ole would kill united this season if care is not taken.

He is a good player but he never deserved to play till the 88th minute I wished ole substituted him earlier because he was very clumsy yesterday during the game he is fast yes and I know his growing but the reason as to why we even drew is partly because of him and lingard too
