David De Gea is buying the £2.5million five-bedroom mansion he has been renting for the last year in a further boost to Manchester United's hopes of tying the star down to the club.

The Spanish stopper, 27, is on the verge of agreeing a new £200,000-a-week contract.

His current deal runs out at the end of June but the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

De Gea clinched the Sir Matt Busby award last season for the fourth time and was undoubtedly United's best player.

No player has now won the gong more times to be voted United's top star, while also clinching the Premier League's golden glove award for 18 clean sheets.

And despite nearly singing for Real Madrid three years ago — before the curious incident of the dodgy fax machines kept him at Old Trafford.

The three-storey mansion on the outskirts of Greater Manchester has a massive walk-in shower area, kitchen-diner and living room space.

There is also a huge garden at the rear of the property, which is within an easy drive of Manchester Airport and United's training ground at Carrington.

And De Gea will be able to keep those all-important hands clean in one of five bathrooms.

There is also plenty of living space in the two living rooms.

De Gea and Edurne lived around the corner before in a rented property and United fans feared he would leave the club after he sold his luxury £3.85m property two years ago.

He tweeted after United's win: "Always good to be back at Old Trafford. Amazing atmosphere."

Jose Mourinho's side face Brighton away on Sunday in their second Premier League game of the season before hosting Tottenham on August 27.
