David Luiz heavily criticised after woeful display in Tottenham loss

David Luiz was subjected to intense criticism after his woeful display at Wembley contributed to Chelsea's first defeat of the season.

The Brazilian defender was directly involved in all of Tottenham's goals; needlessly giving away a soft free-kick which Tottenham subsequently opened the scoring from before moving out of the way of Harry Kane's strike and allowing Son Heung-Min to cut inside and complete a wonderful solo goal to seal the victory for Tottenham.

Luiz, 31, had made a strong start to the season and finally appeared to have come of age as a defender but took a huge step backwards after Saturday's display with his lethargic and impetuous attempt to stop Son serving as the epitome of his afternoon.

BT Sport commentator Steve McManaman was left astounded by his attempts to stop the South Korea international and accused him of reverting back to the Luiz of old.

'David Luiz cannot defend today, he's gone back to his old days,' he said. 'This challenge on Son, I'm sorry, no urgency yet again, that is awful. I don't even think it goes through his legs, it just goes to the side.'

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also picked Luiz's performance a part and suggested that he could affect the development of Antonio Rudiger.

Ferdinand added: 'David Luiz on the ball is fantastic, he has personality, he wants to play and deliver the ball into dangerous areas for his team and he can play those balls but especially places like here before you think about with the ball you have to get your house in order defensively.

'I think at the moment, Rudiger is a young centre half who is improving all the time and as a young centre half you need someone alongside you where you know where they are going to be.

'Sometimes David Luiz plays a bit like maverick, like he's playing on his own, he plays his own game at times and that leaves other people exposed at the back four and I think that's the problem at the moment in the last couple of games and it's having an affect on the likes of Rudiger who is a promising young centre half.'

The defeat marked Chelsea's first of this Premier League season and Maurizio Sarri admitted afterwards there are several problems he will have to address ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash against PAOK.

'It's clear, I knew very well that we had a lot of problems to solve and I think today it was clear for everybody,' he said.

'I hope first of all from the players, because I told them in the last two weeks that we had a big problems with the approach to the match and today was the same.

'This was the first problem, today I saw a lot of problems because we played very badly - physically, mentally, technically and tactically.

'So we have a lot of work, we have a lot of problems to solve.

'We have to try and do something because the defensive phase today was a disaster. The offensive players pressed very badly, the midfielders defended not very well and the defensive line as a consequence was a disaster. The defensive phase as a team was a disaster.'
