David Wagner considers appealing against Steve Mounie's red card

An incensed David Wagner is deliberating whether to appeal Steve Mounie’s red card after savaging Michael Oliver’s decision to send off the Huddersfield Town striker.

Mounie saw red after scraping the shin of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma while the hosts were a goal up and chasing consecutive wins for the first time since February.

Wagner was irate at Oliver for that and the denial of a first-half penalty, later claiming ‘football is no fun’ after Chris Hughton’s Brighton left with all three points.

Huddersfield have until 1pm today to lodge an appeal with the FA. If they do not then Mounie is facing a three-match ban, starting on Tuesday down at Bournemouth.

The FA will also decide whether Wagner went too far in his criticism of Oliver. ‘The referee has a big part to play and I don’t think he did his best,’ the German said. ‘I don’t like to be disrespectful but I don’t want to discuss anything else apart from the referee’s decisions.’

Hughton believes Brighton have much improving to do, despite being almost halfway to the 40-point golden safety target after 14 games. Victory at the John Smith’s Stadium was only their second on the road in 21 matches.

‘One thing is the points and another thing is where you are in this division, and is there a gap between them?’ Hughton said. ‘At the moment, am I happy? Yes. Do I think we can play better? Yes.

‘We haven’t played as consistently well as I would have liked. So I hope there is more to come, particu-larly with plenty of players pushing as hard as they are.’

The Brighton manager suggested he is unlikely to make any signings in the January window, while new technical director Dan Ashworth is not expected to start until March.

‘At the moment I don’t really see us doing much business, if any at all,’ Hughton said.

‘I never say no because sometimes what happens is there is an opportunity to do something you didn’t think was there and you have a decision to make. At the moment we’re happy with the 25 we have got.’
