De Bruyne registers his 23rd assist of the season after setting up Haaland goal

Kevin De Bruyne has clocked the most assists he's ever achieved in a single season for Manchester City.

The Belgian's set-up for Erling Haaland's goal against Bayern Munich on Tuesday was his 23rd in all competitions this campaign, surpassing his record of 22 in the 2019-20 season.

City still have a potential 13 games remaining this campaign as they chase three trophies, leaving room for De Bruyne to soar past that number, with a career total of 259 now equal with David Beckham.

Provided by Opta, De Bruyne also has at least five more assists than any other player in Europe's big five leagues this campaign.

PSG's Lionel Messi is the closest to his number with 18 assists for the French side so far.

De Bruyne has flourished in Pep Guardiola's new 3-2-4-1 system, and is beginning to form an impressive partnership with Haaland.

He has always been regarded as the chief creators in City's side, and recently hit 100 assists for the club in the Premier League.

He's also logged 140 assists in all competitions, a City record, 18 clear of Spaniard David Silva.

City qualified for the semi-final of the Champions League on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich, completing a 4-1 aggregate win and setting up a mouth watering tie against holders Real Madrid in the last four.

Pep Guardiola's side also face Sheffield United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley this weekend, while they are four points behind Arsenal in the Premier League with a game in hand and the Gunners still to play.

De Bruyne will naturally play a vital role in the run-in as his side start to up the gears and once again look unstoppable.

Beating Bayern Munich by three goals over two legs, and in doing so withstanding some very heavy pressure on Wednesday evening, is a statement victory, with the potential of replicating the 1999 season of rivals Manchester United a serious possibility.
