De Gea or Dean Henderson? Man Utd's options for next season's No.1 goalkeeper

There may be two months left of the football season but clubs across the world will be planning for the next campaign.

For Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he faces a goalkeeper dilemma as to who will be his No 1 come 2020-21.

Does he stick with perennial first-choice David de Gea or give Dean Henderson a shot? Alternatively is there someone else? Sportsmail takes a look at the Norwegian's options.

David de Gea

David de Gea has been an automatic starter for Manchester United since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for £18.9million. In terms of value for money, without doubt the Spaniard has been one of the club's greatest-ever buys during his near nine-year service.

De Gea has racked up 393 appearances during his time at Old Trafford and has bailed his team-mates out countless times in years gone by. However, last season and this have seen his standards slip below his supreme best.

With speculation over his future last term, his mistakes contributed to United missing out on a top-four finish - most notably in their 1-1 home draw with Chelsea on April 28, 2019.

The Spain international has been shaky this season too. On Sunday, his lackadaisical error resulted in Everton's opener in their 1-1 draw with United at Goodison Park.

Since the start of last season no goalkeeper has made more errors leading to a goal than De Gea with seven - the same as Jordan Pickford, Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno. It's a worrying statistic for Solskjaer to ponder although he was defiant in his support for De Gea post-match on Sunday.

'He went through a difficult patch last season, definitely, but he has been very, very good this season,' he said. 'I can't remember any errors that I would go to now apart from the Watford one this season. I trust David 100 per cent.

'David has shown here his reaction, the way he made amends and saved Sigurdsson's chance at the end. David is for me the best goalkeeper in the world.'

If United ever decide to sell De Gea, one major hurdle would be the long-term deal paying him £375,000 a week that he signed in September. That limits the number of clubs who could afford him.

Dean Henderson

If the Red Devils did decide to sell their stalwart in De Gea, then the obvious replacement would be Dean Henderson. Clamours for the 22-year-old to become the club's No 1 are growing by the week as he shines at Sheffield United, while De Gea dithers at the Theatre of Dreams.

Henderson is enjoying a brilliant season at Bramall Lane as they remain in the hunt for a Champions League spot in their first season back in the top-flight since 2007. The Blades, who sit eighth, have a game in hand and could climb to fifth if they win that - leapfrogging Manchester United, Wolves and Tottenham.

Henderson has played a key role in their Premier League ascendancy, keeping nine clean sheets in the top-flight. Only Burnley's Nick Pope (11) and Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker (10) boast more.

Furthermore, statistically Henderson is outperforming De Gea in all competitions. Having played in fewer games (29 to 31), Henderson has conceded less goals (24 to 33), has a higher save percentage (74.5 per cent to 71.6 per cent) and more clean sheets (10 to nine).

'We want the best possible squad for Manchester United and Dean is our player. He is doing really well at the moment and the day he comes back he is fighting to play here as well,' Solskjaer said on Sunday.

'We want a squad that is full of quality and with competition. If you want to survive at the top you need to bounce off competition right left and centre.'

As revealed by Sportsmail, United will assess their goalkeeping situation over the next few months and are due to hold talks with Henderson's representatives before the end of the month.

England Under 21 star Henderson, who may well be given an improved contract by United to ward off interest from clubs around Europe, has ambitions to be first choice at Old Trafford and is now seen as a genuine threat to De Gea.

The 22-year-old is likely to be sent out on loan for a third season, possibly at Sheffield United again, unless De Gea's situation changes.

Henderson's form is set to earn him an England debut too with Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate keen to do so before Euro 2020 - another indicator of his brilliant form.

Sergio Romero

If there was a claim for the best back-up goalkeeper in the Premier League then Sergio Romero would be among the candidates leading them. As deputy No 1, the Argentine has been impeccable in his role behind De Gea since his arrival in 2015.

A calming influence at the back, Romero can appear too laid-back at times on the pitch, but don't let that fool you.

In the 13 matches he's played in all competitions this season he has kept 10 clean sheets while conceded just three goals.

With 96 international caps to his name too, United know they have an experienced figure in goal if De Gea doesn't play. At 33, Romero is happy with his back-up role at Old Trafford though so it appears unlikely that would be asked to become Solskjaer's No 1 moving forward.

Other options

The other goalkeepers to have sampled first-team football at United are Lee Grant and Joel Pereira - although both are unlikely options to become the club's No 1 next season.

Current third-choice keeper Grant is out injured following wrist surgery and at 37-years-old isn't a long-term solution.

Meanwhile, Pereira is on loan at Hearts - where he has established himself as their first-choice. Although he's only 23, the Portuguese is likely to be behind De Gea, Henderson and Romero in the pecking order next season if he stuck around.

An alternative for Solskjaer is to buy a goalkeeper in the summer too. However, the Red Devils haven't been linked with anyone in this position - such is their strength in depth with De Gea, Henderson and Romero at present.
