There is a new twist in the Fuenlabrada saga, with the club having reached an agreement with LaLiga to definitively suspend their LaLiga SmartBank Matchday 42 fixture away at Deportivo La Coruna.

This match was due to be held last Monday, but was postponed when coronavirus cases were detected at Fuenlabrada.

Depor were relegated even without playing, but Fuenlabrada still had a chance to reach the promotion playoffs as they could have caught up to Elche in sixth place.

Yet, over the course of the week the sanitary situation at Fuenlabrada worsened and they announced on Saturday that their total number of COVID-19 cases was up to 28, between players and other staff.

With rescheduling the remaining fixture proving to be so difficult, Fuenlabrada agreed to forfeit the potential three points that were on offer.

"LaLiga expresses its complete gratitude for the sporting generosity shown by Fuenlabrada with the club's willingness to accept the pro-competition principle and to abide by the decision chosen by LaLiga between the two solutions proposed by the club," a LaLiga statement released on Sunday afternoon said.

"These were to wait to play the match after the recovery of the players or to suspend the match permanently.

"Given the situation and the impossibility of setting a date, not even a probable date, LaLiga has informed the competition committee of its agreement to definitively suspend the match due to exceptional circumstances and/or force majeure.

"As such, LaLiga will communicate to the Spanish football federation that it'll be Elche who will take the final spot in the playoffs for promotion to LaLiga Santander."

"This enormous sacrifice means Fuenlabrada are renouncing the possibility of contesting the playoffs and, for the players, it means sacrificing the effort and hard work of the whole season in order to allow all clubs to complete the competition.

"That is a difficult sacrifice that makes the decision taken all the more praiseworthy."

According to Cadena Cope, the potential dates for the playoffs are now July 30 and August 2 for the two legs of the semi-finals between Real Zaragoza and Elche and between Almeria and Girona.

Then, the two legs of the playoff final would be August 5 and August 8.
